F O C U S Dyestuffs Corp, producing classic organic pigments, dyes and leather chemicals at another site in Qingdao. Ciba also has a joint venture producing quinacridone pigments at Xiangtan (Hunan province). Its research and development centre supporting these various manufacturing operations is located in Shanghai. The new high performance organic pigments plant on the site near Qingdao airport is intended to meet growing demand from Chinese customers in the domestic automotive, plastics and construction industries. Ciba also plans to establish its Asian regional headquarters for the Coating Effects segment at this site. Neue Zuercher Zeitung, 19 Dec 2006, 227 (295), 11 (in German)
China: CPS – tinting system colorants CPS Color recently established new units in Shanghai for production and warehousing of tinting system colorants. Shanghai has also been selected as the location for its Asia/Pacific headquarters, coordinating activities at manufacturing and sales offices in Sydney (Australia), Mumbai (India) and Dammam (Saudi Arabia). India: Asahi Songwon – phthalo blue Thanks to technical assistance from Clariant’s South Korean subsidiary, Asahi Songwon Colors will treble its crude copper phthalo blue capacity at Vadodara (aka Baroda, Gujarat province) from 3600 tonnes/y to 10,800 tonnes/y by September 2007. This will cost Rup 300 M (roughly $6.8 M). In a related project, Asahi Songwon will invest Rup 135.5 M (roughly $3.1 M) to establish a downstream unit for making Pigment Blue 15-beta at Vadodara. This unit should come on-stream in November 2007. ICIS Chemical Business, 15 Jan 2007, (Website: http://icischemicalbusiness.com)
India: Selective Minerals – iron oxides Selective Minerals & Colour Industries Pvt Ltd intends to step up its output of iron oxide pigments, following the
launch of SR-680, a new grade designed for the metal primer market. Selective Minerals currently produces about 15,000 tonnes/y of iron oxide pigments at two plants – Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru. As well as domestic sales, the company exports iron oxide pigments to more than 40 countries. Industrial Minerals, Nov 2006, (470), 19
India: Tata – TiO2 Tata Iron & Steel Co (Tisco) plans to open up its first titanium minerals mine in Tamil Nadu province in 1Q 2009, with an initial capacity of 500,000 tonnes/y of ilmenite. The location has not yet been determined, but the company holds an exploration licence covering 8000 ha in the Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. In the second stage of this Rup 25 bn project, Tisco will establish a 100,000 tonnes/y TiO2 pigment plant. (See also ‘Focus on Pigments’, Jan 2005, 7). Chemical Weekly, 21 Nov 2006, 52 (14), 122
Iran: Kahnooj – TiO2 The Iranian Government is holding a tender for the design and construction of an integrated sands-to-TiO2 pigment complex, to be based on the Kahnooj ilmenite deposit in southern Iran. The complex will include: a mining operation, generating 130,000 tonnes/y of ilmenite; an ilmenite smelter, generating 70,000 tonnes/y of TiO2 slag; and a sulfate-route plant with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes/y of TiO2 pigment. Bids of the order of $500 M are anticipated and prequalification documents should have been filed by mid-December 2006. At least nine foreign bids have already been submitted, including proposals from enterprises in China and Ukraine.
