Catalysis in Saudi Arabia The following announcement, which will be of interest to many readers, has recently been received: "The Research Institute of the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, has established well equipped catalyst testing and evaluation laboratories to provide R&D backup, which is imperative to the hydrocarbon industry. These laboratories have facilities for chemical, physical, surface and thermal analysis of heterogeneous catalysts being extensively used in local petroleum plants and petroleum refineries." Chinese Journal of Catalysis Issue Number 3 of Volume 7 of the Chinese Journal of Catalysis was received recently. Among the papers are the following: Guo Weng-gui et al., IR spectroscopic study of H2, CO and NH3 adsorbed on Ir/Al 0 ; Xu Zhu-sheng et al., Study of car23 onaceous deposition on Pt/ catalysts by temperature progAl2O3 rammed desorption; Xie Mao-song et al., Relation between metal-support interaction and thermal desorption of hydrogen on supported Pt catalysts: Bao Xin-he and Deng Jing-fa, The oxidation of methanol on an electrolytic silver catalyst; and Zheng Lu-bin et al., The effect of alkali metal cation on the acidic properties of Y and Pd-Y zeolite catalysts. Research notes include: Hu Jie-han et al., IR spectroscopic investigation of adsorbed CO on Pt/Ti02 + Nb catalyst: Yu Min and Lin Pei-yan, total oxidation reaction of ethane Over Nd0.7Srp.3~;~? catalyst; and Fan Chong-zheng e Investigation of the thermal stability of KM-01 Ni-catalyst for the shift methanation reaction. Although the journal is written in Chinese, English abstracts are supplied and the legends to figures and tables are also given in English; it is thus relatively easy to get a very good idea of the content of each paper. Catalysis in Tianjin, China The Teaching and Research Group on Industrial Catalysis of Tianjin University, China, was founded in 1970 and now consists of about 20 members of staff engaged in both aspects of its activities. Among the staff are two professors, (Zhang Liu and Zhao Jiusheng) and five associate professors (Zhu Chunli, Qin

Yongning, Zhong Shunhe, Liao Qiaoli and Wu Xingya). In addition, there are six graduate students who are studying for their Ph.D.s and more than twenty who are studying for their masters degrees. Moreover, the group also takes on teaching tasks for thirty undergraduate students every year. The group takes an interest in heterresearch ogeneous catalysis and the activities are divided into a series of subjects. To date, these have been as follows (the names of the people in charge and their assistants are given in brackets): Methanol synthesis, higher alcohol synthesis and low-temperature shift (Zhao Jiusheng, Zhu Chunli, Ma Fushan and Kang Hui-min). Naphtha steam reforming and hydrodealkylation (Qin Yongning, Liao Qiaoli, Liang Zhencheng, Wang Shiwen and Wang Xiaoling). High temperature shift, deactivation of catalysts and standardisation of catalyst evaluation (Zhang Liu, Zhang Jiyan, Li Yumin and Li Yongdan). Hydrotreating of petroleum products (Wu Xingya and Guo Xiumin), Laser catalysis and applications of kieselguhr (Zhong Shunhe and Zhao Jing) The services and techniques supporting the research work include XRD, surface area measurement, DTA, TG, DSC, a laser unit, IR, Magnetometer, TPR, MSTPD and some catalytic activity evaluation systems operating at high pressure (100 bar). Modern analysis techniques are available at the Analysis Centre of Tianjin University; these include NMR, TEM, SEM and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Chen Baoshu Forthcoming Meetings In the full calendar printed in this issue, there are several new 1987 entries which have not yet appeared in the listing. The first of these is a meeting entitled "Catalysis of the Future", this being the 22nd State-of-the-Art Summer Symposium sponsored by the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society. The organisers of this symposium, which is to be held at the Berkeley campus of the University of California, will be Dr. Madan Bhasin of Union Carbide (whose address is given in the Calendar) and Prof. Gabor Somorjai, of the Department of Chemistry, Univer-
