FOCUS increased by 5-7% between 2003 and 2004 and it is expected to grow by a further 6% in 2005. Consumption is estimated at 92,000 tonnes for 2004, which looks rather high compared against Artikol’s preliminary estimate of 70,000 tonnes or less. However, the two sources agree that Russian paint production increased by only 1% in volume terms and by 6-7% in value terms between 2003 and 2004. The ‘PPCJ’ estimate for the size of the Ukrainian market also looks rather high – at 19,000-20,000 tonnes, of which 4000-5000 tonnes is imported. Japan’s TiO2 output almost unchanged at 254,000 tonnes/y For calendar year 2004, Japanese TiO2 pigment production was 253,944 tonnes, of which rutile grades accounted for 206,993 tonnes; anatase grades for 46,951 tonnes. Shipments by domestic manufacturers were 254,808 tonnes, of which exports accounted for 87,500 tonnes, while Japanese customers accounted for 167,308 tonnes. Within the latter figure, Japanese paintmakers accounted for 74,422 tonnes. Overall, supply and demand were almost balanced and for the year as a whole Japanese TiO2 manufacturers reduced their inventories by only 1000 tonnes. The next three countries in the global league table – South Africa, Bolivia and Tajikistan – have a combined output of only 12,000 tonnes/y. Chinese organic pigment producer profiles A special ‘PPCJ’ survey on China profiles three suppliers of organic pigments. Changzhou North American Chemicals Group Co Ltd is one of the country’s biggest organic pigment manufacturers, producing azo and phthalocyanine pigments for use in printing ink, paint, rubber, plastics and pigment printing pastes for textiles and stationery industries. Altogether, the company produces 60,000 tonnes/y of organic pigment, of which 65% is exported. Jeco produces organic pigments for printing ink, plastic, paint and textile printing pastes at two plants, one in Huanghua city (Hebei province) and the other at Shanyu city (Zhejiang province). Jeco produces 2600 tonnes/y of phthalo green, 5000 tonnes/y of phthalo blue and 3000 tonnes/y of azo pigments. The company has 11 sales offices in China, one in Russia and one in the US. Tianjin Cheng Hong Dyestuff Chemical Industry Co Ltd is a relatively small supplier, producing 1500 tonnes/y of organic pigments for applications in the leather industry and other sectors. Numbers of small-scale Indian dyemakers whittled down by tighter tax & pollution regulation There are about 50 relatively largescale or “organised sector” dyestuff manufacturers in India, accounting for 60% of the country’s total output. The balance is contributed by about 650 small-scale producers. Until recently, there were about 900 small-scale producers, but their numbers have been whittled down as a result of improvements in charging and collecting taxes and duties and tighter regulation of pollution controls. For example, last year dyestuff factory

operators in the Tirupur area were ordered by the Chennai High Court to pay compensation totalling Rup 1.04 bn to farmers in the Noyyal River Basin area because local groundwaters had been contaminated by factory effluents. Total Indian dyestuff capacity is 150,000 tonnes/y, of which 80% is attributable to Maharashtra and Gujarat provinces. More and more OEMs exert influence over selection of plastic colorant supplier Traditionally, suppliers of colorants and other additives for incorporation into plastic products have dealt with plastic processors as their direct customers. In turn, the plastic processors have sold their products to or fulfilled orders from their customers – the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – the manufacturers of cars, computers, furniture, packaging, etc. But nowadays, more and more OEMs insist on playing a key role in the decision-making process as to which colorant shall be used in their finished products. Procter & Gamble and Apple Computer tend to select just one or two colorant suppliers and require their processors to use those companies’ colorants. Other OEMs – Dell Computer, Unilever, Ford, General Motors and Daimler Chrysler – list several approved suppliers, giving the intermediary processor rather more choice about who to work with. PolyOne (one of the world’s largest colorant suppliers, created by the merger of Geon and Hanna) has a business relationship with Procter & Gamble which dates back to 1989. PolyOne colorants are now used in the plastic bottles and closures for many Procter & Gamble products, including the famous orange bottles of Tide laundry detergent. PolyOne estimates that 45% of its sales revenue from colorants this year will arise from direct specification by
