FOCUS Neo’s sales into Germany of a certain cerium-zirconium mixed oxide composition, infringed Solvay patent EP 0,863,846, which expired in Jun 2016. This last judgment follows a series of previous judgments issued on cerium-zirconium mixed oxide compositions which already found that Neo’s sales infringed two other Solvay patents, and therefore enhances the basis for Solvay claiming damages from Neo for their past infringing activities. Neo has appealed those earlier judgments and has the right to appeal the 18 Jul 2017 judgment. Rare earth oxides are used in automotive catalysts to abate noxious gases from engine exhaust. Process for preparing a base oil having a reduced cloud point US-based Shell Oil Co and The Netherlands’ Shell Internationale Research Maatschappij Bv have been granted Patent No WO/2016/ 107914 (Publication date: 7 Jul 2016) for a method for producing a base oil fraction with a lower cloud point, from a hydrocarbon feed made through a Fischer-Tropsch process. The method involves processing hydrocarbon feed through catalytic dewaxing treatment; separating partly isomerized product into one or more heavy and one or more light hydrocarbon fractions; and separating at least one of the heavy base oil fractions into a first permeate and a first retentate.

Membrane aerated biofilm reactor. Israel-based Emefcy Ltd has been granted Patent No WO/2016/108227 (Publication date: 7 Jul 2016) for a water treatment module. The material features a set of hollow-fibre membranes, at least one end of which is connected to a source of biofilm growth-supporting gas (BGSG); and a gas diffuser associated with the other end of the membrane bundle. The patent also covers systems, devices and processes that utilize the module.

Method for pretreating and using copper-based catalyst This patent claims an improved method for pretreating the copper-based catalyst having the steps of dehydrating the copper-based catalyst at an elevated temperature, reducing the dehydrated copper-based catalyst with hydrogen, and passivating the activated copper-based catalyst to obtain a catalyst suitable for N-alkylation. The dehydration and reduction steps may be conducted simultaneously.
