Ecka heads for US to form new aluminium foam venture GERMAN non-ferrous powder manufacturer, Ecka Granules has formed Alulight of America to make products using its aluminium foam technology in Newark, Delaware. It has also purchased technology from Fraunhofer USA developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Materials Research (IFAM) in Bremen, Germany. IFAM are leaders in aluminium foam technologies (See Metal

Powder Report, January 2005). Ecka will take over the Fraunhofer USA Center for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (CMAM) in Newark. Dr Thomas Trendelenburg, former president of Ecka Granules of America based in Louisville, Kentucky, will head the new company and move to Delaware. Leon Fabrikanov has assumed his position at Ecka Granules. CMAM focused on developing steel

and aluminium energyabsorbing foam products in armoured vehicles and highspeed trains. "We are excited about expanding our research base in metal-foam technology and we look forward to creating a production facility in Delaware," Dr Trendelenburg said. Alulight has a working relationship with Lightweight Solutions, Inc., owned by former CMAM Director Dr Dennis Claar.

New course PERDAC and ASL have developed a new course devoted entirely to Atomising Metals for Powder Production. They have extended and revamped the material on this subject in the earlier course and will run the new course during an intensive period of two days 2-3 June in Manchester, UK. The course is directed at all those using or developing metal atomising plant, or researching in the metal spraying field. Dr Ghasem Nasr, course organiser and leader of the Spray Research Group at Salford University, commented: “Registrants are expected from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the UK. CISP looks east THE Center for Innovative Sintered Products (CISP) at Pennsylvania State University and the Northeast Asia Industry Technology Cooperation division (NATC) of Paichai University, Korea have entered into a general agreement to foster international cooperation in education and research. It encourage exchanges involving activities, such as: • Construction of a database of technology • Organisation of joint international conferences and workshops • Exchange of scholars and students • Organising joint research information and materials The opening of the International Inter Disciplinary Material Research Center in Daejeon City NATC is a co-operation between research institutions in China, Japan, Sieberia and Korea. NATC is currently working with three colleges and will join the R&D district operation at Daejeon City in July. This effort was made possible by Dr Dae-Young Lim, director, Northeast Asia Industry Technology Co-operation Division (NATC) and Professor, Division of Advanced Materials Engineering at Paichai and Dr Randall German, director CISP. • Korea has been selected to be the host country for the 2006 Powder Metallurgy World Congress. This major conference and exhibition is to be staged in Pusan.
