CITATION FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE DOWN SURGICAL PRIZE TO A. W. MOULE 1980 Mr President, Ladies and Gentlemen, the regulations for the Down Surgical Prize state that it will be considered a high honour to be awarded to a person or persons who are adjudged to have made a major contribution to Oral Surgery in the widest sense. When one looks at Alan Moule's career it is obvious that he has made many major contributions to our specialty. He became a specialist Oral Surgeon with the Emergency Medical Services in 1940 and then Consultant Oral Surgeon to the Manchester Regional Hospital Board in 1948. He built the specialty of Oral Surgery in the North West with a huge clinical practice and still found time to make major cor~tributions in the development of new techniques and instrumentation in Facial Trauma and Orthognathic Surgery. However, his influence in the development of the specialty was not only at a regional level for he was a Foundation Fellow and Member of the Steering Committee of this Association before becoming the President of B.A.O.S. in 1964. His great interest in our specialty still continues of course and we are quite often reminded at our meetings of his humour and sharp wit should we become too pompous and we are soon cut down to size. During all this time he was making another major contribution to Oral Surgery, in the training of future Oral Surgeons and it is a staggering fact that when one looks at the li~t of Fellows of this Association, one in ten have been trained by Alan Moule and for those of us who are fortunate enough to have worked for him and been trained by him, wequickly came to appreciate his surgical skill, his careful planned surgery, his general care of patients and not least hisgreatenthusiasm for our specialty. For many others he has always been someone to turn to for adviceand h e l p - we don't always like the advice we get but invariably it turns out to be the correct advice.
