Additives for Polymers
Taft, LA, USA, manufacturing facility, beginning in January 2007. With the additional capacity, the company says it will be better positioned to supply customers, especially those needing epoxidized soybean oil for production of flexible PVC. Chemtura, and its predecessors, has been servicing the vinyl industry for more than 50 years, and is “committed to grow with our customers into the future”, says Diana Peninger, global business director – Vinyl Additives. The company’s range of vinyl additives includes a broad portfolio of plasticizers, as well as lubricants, UV absorbers, heat stabilizers, flame retardants and others. Chemtura’s move follows the announcement from Dow Chemical that it is exiting the peroxymeric chemicals business, with production ceasing for most products by 31 October 2006. Included in this portfolio are Dow’s Flexol™ EPO and LOE products – epoxidized soya and linseed oils, respectively – used as plasticizers and stabilizers in various polymer systems in applications such as flooring, upholstery, food packaging, hoses, tubing and blood bags. Dow says the exit is the result of a period of declining revenue and poor market conditions for these products. Clariant, Songwon to go separate ways on antioxidants Korea’s Songwon Industrial Co, Ltd and Clariant International Ltd of Switzerland have mutually agreed to end their cooperation in antioxidants as of 31 January 2008 after many years of a successful partnership. The decision is the result of a strategic re-orientation of both companies based on the global market development. Until January 2008, Clariant will continue to distribute antioxidants (1010, 1076 and 168 types) and related blends produced by Songwon

Industrial. After the termination of the existing agreement, Clariant and Songwon will pursue their activities in antioxidants for the polymer markets independently. The two companies have separately announced their strategies following the ending of the cooperation. Clariant’s Pigments & Additives Division has already reached agreement with a group of Asian industrialists to establish a new cooperation for the production and distribution of standard antioxidants to meet the increasing demand for base stabilizers for plastics and other polymeric materials in Asia. A state-of-the-art production facility will be located in Asia. The company says this move ensures continuous service to customers in the plastics industry. At Songwon, antioxidant capacity is to be increased through the construction of a second manufacturing site for phenolic and phosphite antioxidants near its Ulsan facility in South Korea. Jongho Park, Songwon president and COO, says the company has committed US$120 million to the design, construction and initial operation of the new plant. The first phase of the project should be completed by 2Q 2007, bringing the company’s antioxidant capacity to 55 000 tonnes/y, a 60% increase in capability. Songwon is also extending its hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) and benzotriazole UV light absorber product lines, as well as antioxidants for niche applications. According to the company, this strategy amounts to an “increased commitment” to the polymer industry. In addition, the company is looking to establish “direct channels to serve global markets”. It has already opened Matsubara Bussan in Japan, Shanghai Songwon Brilliant Chemicals in China, and in July of this year formed Songwon International to cover Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
