prietary formulations, containing no binders or fillers which could contaminate the resin. They are also claimed to be highly effective at addition rates of as low as 0.25%, by resin weight. Axe1 notes that, as well as improving mould release, the new additive forms can reduce the resin viscosity without adverse effect on physical properties. This makes for better flow of the resin at lower temperatures, and reduced flow marks and knit lines on moulded products - all of which make a significant contribution to increased productivity. Compared with commodity lubricants, the MoldWiz pellets will not leave a residue on moulded parts, which therefore do not need to be cleaned before secondary processing, such as printing, painting or plating. In common with Axel’s other additive products, the pellets are formulated from raw materials that comply with the chemical substance inventory lists of TOSCS, DSL, MITI, EINECS, Australia and Korea, and many also use materials certified by the US Food and Drug Administration as safe for food contact. Clarified PP gives clear packaging to rival PET Addition of clarified polypropylene is giving increased clarity and performance to thin-wall injcction moulded polypropylene packaging for ice cream. Produced by the Italian plastics processor and printer Pibergroup, the containers feature a clear ‘window’ allowing purchasers to see the ice cream inside and, after making several tests, the company found that addition of Milliken’s Millad 3988 clarified polypropylene produced the best combination of clarity while maintaining high packaging standards. According to Milliken, the 3988 grade makes it possible for clarified PP to match the aesthetics of more expensive packaging materials such as PET. In fact, Pibergroup can produce high clarity PP packaging at half the cost of PET. The company uses thin wall injection moulding, which allows it to produce a reinforced container within specific dimensions. The clarified PP additive acts by a strong nucleation effect, which contributes to faster processing, as well as giving high levels of clarity, gloss and moisture barrier properties. It can also be processed at temperatures above 260°C without plate-out or transfer of odour.

Low-dusting enhanced-flow versions of its MagnaPear 1000 and 2000 white pearlescent pigments have been added by Engelhard Corp to its Mearlin product range. The new grades improve operational efficiency by limiting bridging, as the pigment flows from the feed hopper, and also be greatly increasing masterbatch mixing rates at high loadings, especially with polyolefins.

The new pigments are predispersed, and have a proprietary surface treatment that limits agglomeration and fWher improves flow, reducing blending by as much as 50% in comparison with earlier versions.
