Security Dynamics has announced that its SecurID token card could have helped prevent the estimated 21 million lost to hackers breaking into telephone networks and making unauthorized international calls at reduced rates. SecurID, used in conjunction with SecureCall from Octel Communications, could save organizations millions of pounds in unauthorized calls made by hackers breaking into private voice communications networks. Private networks can significantly reduce long distance telephone charges, but they are not completely secure.

The manufacturer claims the product will not only provide round the clock security for the CPU, but its electronic circuitry also extends to both the printer and the monitor units. The device is programmed to prevent the theft of either part or all of a PC system and also it monitors and deters any attempt to tamper with the casing in order to remove memory, the CPU or the hard drive. This microprocessor card plugs into any 8 or 16 bit slot and comes with a tilt sensor, 110 db alarm and a rechargeable battery.

Clean-up new Word macro virus Software Corp. has discovered a new strain of Word T ouchStone macro virus which carries an even more destructive payload than its predecessor, Word Concept. The new virus, “Wazzu” poses a major threat to computer users. The Wazzu virus wreaks havoc within infected documents by changing, moving or adding words. In many instances, the virus will insert the word “wazzu” at random points within a document.
