At the annual awards dinner of SME, held during the International Tool and Manufacturing Engineering Conference in Cleveland in May, the SME Gold Medal was presented to Professor Toshio Sata of Tokyo University. The citation for this award refers to his 'brilliant research and distinguished papers... (which) have contributed greatly to the technical world's understanding of cutting, wear and tool life for various materials'. Seven other awards were also made, to J.F. Barcus, Jr (the Eli Whitney Memorial Award), the late J.A. Cupler II (SME Engineering Citation), L.K. Gillespie (Albert M. Sargent Progress Award), W.B. Johnson (Joseph A. Siegel Memorial Award), F.A. Lennon (SME Distinghished Contributions Award), Professor E.A. Matthias (SME Education Award) and Professor S.A. Tobias (SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal). Journal of Machine Too/Design and Research, and co-founder of the

Engineer at Bendix Kansas City Division, was cited for the development of better machining and deburring processes for precision miniature components. He has researched into drilling printed circuit boards, producing precision miniature slots and fillets, the use of miniature end mills, and defining the state of the art for

Breadboards are often required for applications which need a clean room environment. The VS Series breadboards from Newport feature corrosion-resistant, ferromagnetic stainless steel surfaces and a highperformance internal damping systern for stand-alone vibration isolation applications. Mounting holes are cleaned and positively sealed for

inn the local rigidity, overall, static rigidity, or thermal properties of the breadboard. Height and levelling adjustments are integrated into each breadboard. A load-bearing, doubleslotted rail edge is compatible with Newport mounts and allows breadboards to be joined together, Newport Corporation, PO Box 8020, Fountain Valley, CA 92728, USA

speed forming. In the area of machine tool dynamics he has investigated the theory of chatter, dynamic metal-cutting, methods for determining the dynamic characteristics of machine tool structures, computer-aided prediction of chatter and cad of structures. In addition to his position as Head of Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Birmingham, UK, Professor Tobias is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International

Engineering surfaces conference planned for next year The third international conference on the Metrology and Properties of Engineering Surfaces will be held at Teesside Polytechnic, Middlesborough, UK on 10-12 April 1985. Previous conferences in the series were held at Leicester Polytechnic in April 1979 and April 1982. The main themes of the coming event will be: • • •

The application of new surface measuring techniques in industry The development of new tactile instruments The development of new techniques for the optical measurement of engineering surfaces

The compilation and analysis of data from specific manufacturinn processes Organizing Secretary, Ken Stout, told us that the Planning Panel had been 'overwhelmed' with papers of a high standard. More than 50 papers have been offered so far. He was also pleased to say that half of the abstracts submitted were from sources outside the UK and, more importantly, half of the offers had come from industry, K.J. Stout, Department of Production Engineering, Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic, Priory Street, Coventry CV1 5FB, UK

Facilities offered by the Rank Taylor Hobson British Calibration Service Laboratory are described in a sixpage brochure. The publication lists gauges, measuring instruments and standards for which the laboratory is approved to issue calibration certificites. In addition, a section is devoted to investigative and contract inspection of engineered components, carried out on behalf of customers. Copies of the brochure are available free from Rank Taylor Hobson Limited, PO Box 36, New Star Road, Thurmaston Lane, Leicester LE4 7JQ, UK.

Correction In the article by Chakraverti, Pandey and Mehta in the April 1984 issue of Precision Engineering/Analysis of tool temperature fluctuation in interrupted cutting', an error was made in the third paragraph on p. 104. The third sentence should read: 'The magnitude of the stresses decreases with increasing X and becomes zero at X = 0.6ram.'
