At the annual awards dinner of SME, held during the International Tool and Manufacturing Engineering Conference in Cleveland in May, the SME Gold Medal was presented to Professor Toshio Sata of Tokyo University. The citation for this award refers to his 'brilliant research and distinguished papers... (which) have contributed greatly to the technical world's understanding of cutting, wear and tool life for various materials'. Seven other awards were also made, to J.F. Barcus, Jr (the Eli Whitney Memorial Award), the late J.A. Cupler II (SME Engineering Citation), L.K. Gillespie (Albert M. Sargent Progress Award), W.B. Johnson (Joseph A. Engineering surfaces conference planned for next year The third international conference on the Metrology and Properties of Engineering Surfaces will be held at Teesside Polytechnic, Middlesborough, UK on 10-12 April 1985. More than 50 papers have been offered so far.
