In this general report on theme 4 of the Conference (Pock Mechanics of Underground Excavations) the author has considered only those aspects of the subject which he regards as especially i ~ r t a n t to the understanding of the mechsmlcs of underground cavities. He considers in detail a relatively new numerical technique for analysis of underground excavations which expresses the problem wholly in terms of the boundary conditions and some appropriate elementary solutions in elasticity. The discussion of the method is restricted to its application to elastic solids. In the rest of the report a discussion of practical problems involving isolated cavities, tunnels and complex mining excavations is presented. Some less fsmilar aspects of these subjects are dealt with In detail. These include the interaction between the main and the auxiliary mining excavation and design of water barriers.

The results of a series of investigations at the Lenin_ grad Mining Institute are given in this report. Volumetric modelling was used to solve the three-dlmensional problem of deformation and stress distribution in longwall coal mining with roof caving. The theory of ultimate equilibrium was applied to the problem of the rock caving step of fractured rocks In thick deposits with mass breaking. Pock mechanics peculiarities in the permafrost zone are also studied.

The Barenblatt-Khristlamovich for~mulation of the problem of the mining of sheet deposits by longwalls is used to derive mathematically equations for the stressed state I n the rock mass both before and after working. These ex. pressions are used to construct a graph of the pressure distribution on a seam being worked.

This report gives exa~les of the use made in the West German coal mining industry of the laws of rock mechsnics. The particular aspects covered are: redistribution of stresses in the rock mass, mine layouts; design and support of gateroads; and productive excavations and their support.

The role of rock mechanics in the production of mineral fluids, either crude oil, natural gas or both, from underground reservoirs, is discussed. The report is a state-of-the-art review of work published recently or presented at technical meetings before May 1973.

A comprehensive review of large-scale non.coal mining industry is given. Problem areas requiring research and potential innovations to improve technology are identified. Statistics on underground mining methods and information on the equipment and systems used are included. Current practices for various mining methods, including block caving, room and pillar mining, and in-sltu mining, are described.

Some aspects of the time-dependant behaviour of rocks are presented on the basis of available experimental evidence. Several idealised models, providing acceptable representation of rocks under~Ding creep, are e~loyed in analysIng the effects of creep on the lining pressure in underground excavations. For comparison purposes a description of the interaction between an elastic lining and a rock mass exhibiting linear elastic behav~ur is also included.

The author reviews the possibility of underground stone mining in Britain. The advantages and disadvsmtages of underground extraction and factors favouring underground extraction are discussed. Different mining methods are discussed in detail, these include room-and-pillar mining and sub-level stoping.
