PUBLIC HEALTH.

NOVEMBER, 1934.

The Literature of Preventive Medicine. The Local Government Act, 1933. By H. SAMUELS, of the Middle Temple and Northern Circuit, Barrister-at-Law. London: Eyre & Spottiswoode (publishers) Ltd., 1934. pp. 290. Price 12s. Gd. net. The author provides in this volume a summary of the Act designed to show at a glance what changes are effected in the present law. These have been distinguished into three categories: (a) changes effected for the purpose of securing simplicity or greater convenience, (b) changes effected to secure as between the various local authorities a common and uniform basis of practice where no reasonable justification can be shown for die present diversity of practice, (c) changes designed to clear up points in the law which have proved ambiguous or have admitted of various interpretations. All this simplifies reference to and study of the Act, and makes the volume a suitable one for use by health officers. Indigestion: Rationally Dlscussed and Dieted. Bv THQ:\IAS DUTTON, M.D. London: J~hn Bale, Sons & Danielsson, Ltd., 1934. pp. 207. Price 2s. 6d. net. Dr. Dutton first published his book in 1891, and between then and the present year it has passed through eight editions. There is much in what he has to say that the more modern physiologists and experts on nutrition ma~ he inclined to regard askance. At the same time, there are many useful suggestions with a great deal of sound common-sense and much interesting and attractive matter in the book that it can do no one any harm to read, and on account of which the book may be recommended. Cleft Palate Speech. By JOAN H. VAN THAL. Speech Therapist, Royal Dental Hospital, London, etc .. London: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd., 1934. pp.96. Price 3s. net. The writer of this book has had wide experience in dealing with speech defects of all kinds, but from what is stated in various introductory notes by others, she has given particular attention to the improvement of speech following operation for closing a palatal

cleft. Her efforts in numbers of cases have been attended with marked success, and it is because she has been so successful that she has done well to publish her little book. The methods she employs and the exercises she advises are described in such a way that they can be appreciated by medical readers and understood by lay ones. This is the chief merit of the book, for it will enable those in charge of a child with defective speech to cori., tinue the instruction both during and after the course of lessons given by the expert. An extremely interesting and practical brochure, it is very warmly recommended. THE Red Cross booklets, " First Aid in the Home" and" Nursing at Home," give simple. definite and accurate information for people who have to deal with accidents and illness at home without training and with no more than traditional and often inaccurate practice to guide them. The particular hope is that they may be found useful in welfare centres, women's institutes, clubs, etc., and this does not appear to be too much to expect. The booklets are published by the British Red Cross Society, 14, Grosvenor Crescent, London, S.W.I, from whom information as to price, etc., may be obtained.
