Book Review Clinical Asthma, Theory and Practice Edited by Jonathan A. Bernstein and Mark L. Levy, CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida, 2014. Hardcover, 337 pages, $99.95. It is certainly refreshing to review a medical textbook that not only covers an important health problem but also presents the information in a clinically relevant manner that will interest anyone caring for patients with asthma. Drs Bernstein and Levy lead a team of international experts who present the latest research and recommendations for diagnosis and treatment in an engaging, easy-to-follow manner. There are 7 sections, beginning with the basics of asthma, including epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, genetics, and endotypes. Other sections include asthma diagnosis, triggers, education, management (including chapters on special populations), and finally a global perspective on managing asthma. Each chapter begins with a clinical vignette that helps focus the clinician on the practical aspects of the information for that topic. For example, the chapter covering exercise-induced asthma begins with a case of an adolescent with exercise-induced bronchospasm. Similarly, the chapter on asthma in pregnancy begins with a case of a patient with those clinical conditions. Special mention should be directed to the chapter on adherence and outcomes. Not only is the material clearly presented but there are also scanning codes throughout that link to video examples of
communication tools, such as open-ended questioning and patientcentered counselingda virtual video textbook. Another outstanding section is section seven which focuses on a countrywide approach to integrating care for the asthmatic patient, which is particularly useful for primary and secondary care practitioners, and concludes with a chapter about preventing asthma deaths. There are many useful tools and algorithms in this section that are readily incorporated into day-to-day clinical practice. Selecting a panel of international experts as authors has provided a unique diversity and perspective, which makes the text more interesting. Overall, this textbook would be particularly useful for primary care practitioners who would like to have up-to-date relevant information to help them improve their care for their patients with asthma. Medical residents and allergy/pulmonary fellows would also benefit from this textbook. In summary, Clinical Asthma, Theory and Practice is a unique text that presents clinically relevant, up-to-date information with a global perspective. Drs Bernstein and Levy should be commended.
