AOptix to research mobile biometrics for US DoD

T

he US Defense Department (DoD) has awarded a $3m research contract to California-based AOptix to develop mobile biometrics that will allow the soldier out on patrol to record the facial features or iris signature of a suspicious person from his or her smartphone at a distance, according to Wired. AOptix will work with CACI as a subcontractor. AOptix was awarded the contract based on the company’s integration of biometrics, including iris, fingerprint, face and voice recognition, with smartphone technology. This initiative for the DoD will leverage AOptix’ Smart Mobile Identity platform. Now US troops use the Handheld Interagency Identity Detection System (HIIDE) to scan, upload and transmit data from someone’s facial, eye or thumb features to its databases. To operate the HIIDE system, soldiers need to bring cameras close to people’s faces.

C

ognitec Systems has released an advanced version of FaceVACSVideoScan that detects people’s faces in live video streams or video footage and stores anonymous information for each appearance in front of a camera. Operators can receive an alarm if too many people gather in a specific area and measure waiting times to direct traffic. Since the technology can analyse a face for gender, age and ethnicity as people approach a camera, it can trigger the display of a targeted message on a digital sign or other advertising and message devices. The solution allows for real-time comparison of faces to image databases to find known individuals. Security staff can track individuals

Government is biggest spender on biometrics in SEA and ANZ

T

he governments of Southeast Asia (SEA) and Australia-New Zealand (ANZ) are investing heavily in security projects and infrastructure, such as border control systems and national ID programmes, which bodes well for the biometrics market in the two regions, reports analyst firm Frost & Sullivan. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulation mandating all the countries to implement biometric passports by 2015 is further accelerating the growth of the market. Frost & Sullivan’s analysis of the Southeast Asia and Australia-New Zealand biometrics market finds that market revenue is expected to reach around $600m in 2016. Once the government vertical reaches saturation, biometrics market participants will shift their focus to verticals such as banking, consumer electronics, and healthcare where competition is not yet intense, believes Frost & Sullivan. The consumer electronics vertical will be particularly attractive due to the rise in near field communication (NFC) payment, it reports. The market has also slowed down to some extent due to concerns over privacy. Key projects such as a civil ID programme were halted Continued on page 12...
