This book is the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Las Navas de1 Marques, Spain, on July 8-20, 1990. It contains 29 papers grouped under six headings: Geographic space; Cultural influences on the conceptualization of geographic space; Wayfinding and spatial cognition; Cartographic perspectives; Formal treatment of space in mathematics; User interfaces and human-computer interaction. Many of these topics should be of interest to readers of this journal.

This is a mathematical introduction aimed at researchers in the sciences who want to apply digital image processing techniques in their fields. Sixteen chapters deal with image formation and digitization, space and wave number domains, pixels, neighborhoods, means and edges, local orientation, scales, texture, segmentation, shape, classification, reconstruction from projections, motion, displacement vectors, displacement vector fields, and space-time images. Appendixes treat mathematical preliminaries (matrices, transforms) and PC-based image processing.
