COGNITIVE THERAPY FOR CHRONIC STAMMERING F. C O O K London, England

Cognitive therapy has become well established as an important approach for the assessment and treatment of emotional disorders including social phobia, depression, general anxiety disorder, etc. This presentation will demonstrate a Cognitive Model of Stammering and its application to therapy. An assessment protocol, the relevance of early experiences, the role of negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional assumptions and beliefs will be discussed in terms of the Cognitive Cycle. In addition, the techniques of challenging negative thoughts and behavioral experiments will demonstrate the way that assumptions and beliefs can be challenged and restructured to assist clients in accepting their stammering. The measurement of therapy outcome will be presented both through formal assessments such as measures of attitudes, avoidance scales, locus of control, and client's self-report.

MOTOR LEARNING AND STUTTERING: PERCEPTUAL, ACOUSTIC, AND KINEMATIC ANALYSES A. C A R U S O and L. M A X Kent, OH, USA

In a series of three related studies, the effect of practice on speech production in adults who stutter was investigated through perceptual, acoustic, and kinematic analyses. The objective of this brief miniseminar is to summarize the findings from these studies and to provide a theoretical framework that can be used to integrate and interpret the results. Findings from these studies suggest that motor learning, a widely used theoretical framework throughout the nonspeech literature, may provide a valuable perspective regarding the effects of practice (e.g., reduced stuttering frequency during repeated readings) on the speech of individuals who stutter.
