Fillers/Reinforcements Coated calcium carbonate is said to ease dispersion and improve physical properties in moulding of filled PVC and polyolefins. Supercoat is an ultrafine, l-micron mean particle size version with a hydrophobic coating that is said to enhance the filler’s ability to improve impact strength and heat and to accelerate flow. resistance, Applications include films and furniture. A second product, Kotamite, is a 3-micron mean particle size product characterized by low abrasiveness and designed for use in electrical applications. Colorants Pearlescent pigment grades (iridian interference) 201,211,221,231, can be used in the production of very thin-walled articles such as films or toy balloons. They can be compounded with a large variety of plastics, and can be combined with other colorants. The supplier says combinations with carbon black or black mica give interesting bluegreen, or gold effects without the need for other colorants. Pigment particle size distribution is 5-20 micron. Agents

A functionalized polypropylene resulting from polypropylene and maleic anhydride research and trade-named Unite is reported to function as a coupling agent in polypropylene O1993 Elsevier Science Publishers Ltd

compounds filled with talc, mica, and glass, and as a polymer compatibilizer for use in reprocessing mixed plastic waste streams. The functionalized polypropylene product, available in standard pellet form, can be processed in conventional equipment. The first commercially available product in the Unite family, MP-320 is a 20-melt-index polypropylene that is said to be an excellent material for packaging applications. Biocides An isothiazolone-based

biocide, trade-named Vinyzene IT-3025 DIDP is a 25 percent active concentrate in DIDP for such applications as vinyl roofing, tarpaulins, lawn furniture, boat seats and canopies. The product contains no cosolvents that can volatilize during calendering and extrusion operations and, says the manufacturer, since the product contains a higher concentration of active biocide, the introduction of foreign plasticizer is reduced six-fold. Antistatic

Agents

Maztreat AS, from PPG Industries is designed to control dust emissions in the processing of PVC and other powdered polymers when incorporated at levels of 5OOppm. The product will not degrade under extreme processing conditions (26O”C), say the company. PPG Industries also market an environmentally-friendly antistat trade-named Larostat 298-79 which is for surface application and is said to be extremely mild in its toxicological properties. For food packaging, PPG industries has developed Durastat AS-5814 which is an antistat concentrate for use in HDPE materials requiring acceptance by the US Food and Drug Administration. Although it is aminebased, it does not impart a greasy feel to
