The colour atlas on the histology of the rainbow trout, published in German (likely there is also an English translation, as an American ISBN-number is indicated), offers a welcome tool for those dealing with diseases in this fish species. The publication is the work of four authors, two of whom are working on comparative endocrinology at the Ruhr University, Bochum, and one is working for the Fisheries Station in Nordrhein-Westfalen. It is a useful publication for student courses as well as for those whose knowledge of histology has faded a little over the years. On average, each table contains four colour photographs, a redrawing and explanation. They deal with: the integument ( 1); the musculature and the skeleton (2); the brain ( 1); the gonads (3); the gills ( 1); the dentition ( 1); the digestive tract (3); the hormone system (2); the circumventricular organ (2); the blood cells (6); the nerve system (5); the sense organs (4) and the circulatory system ( 1) . Added to the colour atlas is a text booklet dealing with the basic characteristics of the macroscopic anatomy of the rainbow trout as well as an overview of the most common staining techniques. In this respect, it is to be regretted that an integration has not been aimed for with the earlier publication by the late G. Knorr ( 1975) (see De Groot, 1976) dealing with the anatomy and morphology of the rainbow trout. Knorr’s publication offers an admirable presentation of the part of the present publication now given in simple black and white line drawings.
