Operative Surgery. Fundamental International Techniques. Gynaecology and Obstetrics D.W.T. Roberts (ed.) 11 contributors Butterworths, London-Boston, 1977 (212 PP.) & 19.00

About 20 years ago, Professor Schaffer wrote the first edition of Diseases in the Newborn. Since that time, his book has been used in all newborn nurseries all over the world. As were the previous editions, the fourth one is also written especially for the clinician. Although as many as 24 contributors were engaged in writing the book, the structure of the present edition is as homogeneous as the previous ones. Each disorder is systematically treated: incidence, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Both the structure and the index would allow one to find the desired information without delay, even in an emergency! The book is subdivided into 18 parts: that is, the normal and the abnormal newborn, disorders of the respiratory system, disorders of the cardiovascular system, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, disorders of the genitourinary tract, disorders of mineral metabolism and the endocrine system, inborn errors of metabolism, disorders of blood, blood vessels and lymphatics, jaundice, disorders of head, spine and nervous system, infections, disorders of nutrition, disorders of skeletal system, odd-looking babies, disorders of the skin, disorders of the eye, neonatal pharmacology, etc. At the end of the book, some guidelines on infant care in newborn nurseries, pharmacopeia, etc. are given. In spite of the high standards of each section, rapidly changing knowledge on the neonate already poses a need for a fifth edition. Indeed, topics such as treatment of hyaline membrane disease (p. 134) prognosis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (p. 1SO), role of rotavirus in diarrhea1 disease of the newborn

Every reader of this book comprising the generally accepted international techniques will read it with pleasure and interest. The topic of every chapter is treated by one of the most distinguished men of the British gynaecological school. One gets a clear impression of the treatment applied in Great Britain in the various aspects of our field of specialty. This book is to be recommended to every gynaecological surgeon. Fr. Colposcopy in Clinical Practice L. Burke and B.E. Mathews F.A. Davis Co., Philadelphia, 1977 (126 pp., 56 Figs.) Dfl. 53.40 This handy and practical manual about colposcopy contains admirable illustrative material. It gives the gynecologist, who is a novice with this technique, all the necessary information about it. For those who have already had clinical experience, it is of valuable aid for reviewing the main problems in this field. The development of the normal and atypical transformation zone and the evaluation of the epithelium of the cervix and vagina in patients exposed in utero to diethylstilboestrol are clearly illustrated by excellent colpophotographs and succint information.
