FSA d e v e l o p i n g its relations with ISD The Fluid Sealing Association reports that officers of the FSA and the Independent Sealing Distributors met recently in Cleveland, Ohio, to discuss ways in which the two groups could work together on issues which impact both organisations. The ISD's focus is on member education and on strenghtening the position of its members in the distribution link from m a n u f a c t u r e r to user. Formed in 1992, the ISD provides its 116 members with a wide spectrum of services, benefits and information. The FSA is more focussed on educating members' customers and is aiming to be recognized as an international source of information, to take a leadership role in setting standards and to provide education in fluid sealing. In addition to semi-annual meetings, it sponsors technical symposia covering a wide range of issues in the sealing industry and has produced an extensive library of technical publications. As result of the meeting, the following were among the initiatives agreed: •

FSA divisions will be asked if there are "issues presentations that could be done at ISD meetings." These would be issues that impact the ISD, such as new s t a n d a r d s being developed by the FSA. Once the ISD website is complete, there will be reciprocal links with the FSA homepage. The FSA website - www.fluidsealing.com - has been operational since J u n e 1st. An officer of the ISD h a s been asked to make a short presentation at the October meeting, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation and highlighting the difference in missions. An FSA officer will do the same at the A u t u m n ISD meeting. Current FSA publications and videos have been made available to ISD members at the FSA member price.
The FSA also reports that its Metal Gasket Division has set up a subcommittee to examine a proposal from Ecole Polytechnique to test the temperature limitations of non-asbestos filler in spiral wound gaskets. The Non-Metallic Expansion Joint Division is starting the process of writing standard specifications for sphere type expansion joints to include the expansion joint and its installation.

SAE c o m m i t t e e h o s t s zero l e a k a g e symposium The Society of Automotive Engineers' is r u n n i n g a symposium on Zero Leakage Hydraulics on Wednesday October 8th 1997. Hosted by SAE Committee A-6: Aerospace Fluid Power and Control Technologies, the symposium seeks to raise awareness of hydraulic leakage issues, quantify the problem, investigate possible solutions and challenge the hydraulics industry to improve. A line-up of 17 speakers representing airframers, airlines, air force, navy and a host of equipment suppliers is planned. About 200 senior hydraulic engineers are expected to attend, as well as engineering management. The symposium will r u n during the the regular meeting of Committe A-6 at Caesar's, Lake Tahoe NV, USA. A brief s u m m a r y of the agenda follows.

Data is presented that shows the external leakage rate trends following the introduction of new designs into service.

Aircraft removal rates for each actuator will be given and correlated to associated maintenance m a n - h o u r s and costs. Details of specific leakage problems will be identified by geometry, sealing material and installational factors.
