Clicking on the pcRegister padlock icon brings up a simple form that enables users to enter details of all their PCS, including make, model, serial number and the owner's contact details. If the registered machine is lost or stolen the owner can contact Response to acquire access to its details for forwarding to the police. The machine will also be flagged as having gone missing. The company hopes that in the future its register will be used by companies checking on the ownership of hardware they are about to purchase and it should also be of use to police forces seeking to establish the ownership of any PC equipment recovered.

Protection against use of illegal software Knowledge Systems a developer of software security systems, has announced the release of HASP CD v3.0 A laddin with the added benefit of better security and reliability. HASP is a hardware-based software protection system ('dongle') that helps software developers to increase their revenues by ensuring compliance with the software licence and by verifying the integrity of the software in use. NetHASP is a hardware-based licence manager that protects networked software from illegal use. AutoInstall detects the network protocol being used, after which the configuration is defined automatically. The HASP Envelope now provides the option of implementing secure background checks for the HASP dongle. Software developers can decide how often the protected application should perform a check for the HASP key when the protected application is executing. HASP36s is the first software protection key designed especially for the new Half-pitch Centronics parallel port of NEC PCs. PC-CardHASP is a software protection key that fits inside the PC-card slot on many notebook PCs. This makes it a suitable solution for software that is used mainly on notebook PCs.
