Letter to the Editor
Comments on book review of ‘Lymphoedema: Advice on Self-management’ Dear Editor, I read with interest the book review of ‘Lymphoedema: Advice on Self-management’ [1] in a recent issue. I am pleased that the reviewer found the book well laid out and easy to read, but feel they have fundamentally missed the purpose of this most valuable of books. The Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN) is the largest information provider about the condition in the UK, and is run by those living with the condition. Whilst the LSN is not directly involved with this publication, it is in a unique position to comment on both this book and the review. Lymphoedema is a long-term condition in which selfmanagement is vital, not only because a large percentage of care is self-administered, such as skin care, diet, exercise and self-massage, but also because the very real fact for some with the condition is that they have no access to specialist clinicians due to inequity of services around the country. The
authors who are both experts in the field are very aware of the reality of living with lymphoedema in the UK, and as such have made a great deal of effort not to undermine the role of the specialist clinician but to empower the patient. The LSN is happy to recommend this book to patients who have lymphoedema, and also those practitioners who value the role of self-management in a long-term condition that will always be reliant on self-management, particularly as it remains under serviced by the National Health Service.
