Community-acquired Pneumonia. A Plan for Implementing National Guidelines at the Local Hospital Level Julio Ramirez; Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, Philadelphia, 63 pages, 2003. ISBN 07817-4483-0. Respiratory infection is a leading cause of death particularly among the elderly. This highly readable small book outlines the process for implementation of national guidelines in a local practice, the basis of clinical diagnosis of pneumonia, need for hospitalization, isolation, laboratory workup, therapy and indications for discharge from hospital. There is a chapter on prevention. Some aspects of the book would be of relevance to physicians who work with immunologically compromised malnourished patients in the hospital setting. R. K.
