A 52 year-old man presented with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux of almost 20 years’ duration. Physical examination including the mouth and hypopharynx was normal. Upper endoscopy revealed multiple linear whitish plaques involving the mucosa of the middle third of the esophagus (Fig. 1). The lumen was patent throughout the length of the esophagus. A hiatal hernia with short segment Barrett’s esophagus was present. The esophageal mucosa distal and proximal to the linear plaques was normal. Biopsies (Fig. 2) of the esophageal lesions revealed epithelial acanthosis with moderate

basal hyperplasia (10%). A thick layer of dense compact hyper\parakeratosis was noted with pronounced cytoplasmic eosinophilia and small pycnotic nuclei. The outer layer was composed of non-nucleated squamous cells (arrow). Mild stromal edema and congestion were present.
