AMERICAN JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

ination with Bagolini striated glasses. Anyone who has worked with children will recognize the value of the author's advice to whisper to a child in order to get his attention. The author's experience has both a positive and negative effect in this book. At times, he assumes the reader knows a lot: some points are raised and then dropped without sufficient explanation. The Lang stereoscopic test is mentioned repeatedly and is said to be "based on the principle of panography." No illustration of this test is provided and no further explanation is given. Similarly, the scheme for recalculating oblique prism is given without sufficient information. Sometimes the examples do not always jibe with the illustration. In the section on therapy, a departure from widely held European concepts of orthoptic treatment is described. The author states his preference for diagnostic rather than therapeutic orthoptics: "... our expectations for this method of therapy were too optimistic. . . ." Likewise, "ultra late" surgery for esotropia is not advised, but Lang operates late for esotropia by U.S. standards anyway. This book covers nearly all subjects in the area of strabismus, but some are discussed so briefly that they offer the reader little useful information. For example, the use of botulism toxin for the treatment of strabismus is described in one sentence. This book is a must for the student intent on the study of strabismus because

it provides insight into Joseph Lang, a man who truly deserves the title of expert in his field. The book should also be read by anyone wishing to read a concise, well written introduction to strabismus.
