COMPARATIVESUPEROVULATORYRESPONSES IN CROSSBRED DAIRY CATTLE (BOS INDICUSx BOS TAURUS)WITH FSH-I?AND SUPER-OV S.K. Singla and M.L.Madan Embryo TechnologyCentre National Dairy Research Institute,Karnal-132001,INDIA It is becoming increasingly popular to increase milk productionin India through crossbreedingof Bos indicus and Bos taurus cattle. The ultimate aim of thiswork was to increaserhe proliferation of these outstanding crossbred animals. In support of this, a study was taken up to evaluate the comparative performance of FSH-P (Schering Corporation,USA) and Super-OV (Ausa International, USA) in an embryo transferprogramme. The responses were evaluated by examining the number of corpora lutea palpated, number of embryos recovered, embryos transferable, embryos transferred and the pregnanciesconfirmed. Superovulation was started between day 9 and 13 of estrus. The treatmentregime wa8 an 8 injectionscheduleat 12 hour intervals with descending doses of 5,5,4,4,3,3,2and 2 mg for FSH-P and 12,12,9,9, 7,7,6 and 6 units for Super-OV. A total dose of 28 mg and 68 units was administeredin FSH-P and Super-OV respectively. Luteolysiswas achievedby injecting Lutalyse (Upjohn, UK) 48 hours after the first injection of the superovulating drug. The embryoswere flushed on 7 + 1 day of estrus, evaluatedand transferredfresh within 5 hours of collection to the synchronizedrecipientsusing Instrument de Medicine Veterinaire's miniaturised embryo transfer gun in the ipsilateralhorn (Table) Mean Response (+SE) ______________*___-______ Number of Ovula- Embryos Embryos Transferred/ animals tionsl recotransfer- pregnant C.L.'s vered able --..*_----___--- _---_--_ __-__-___ .._----**-cFSH-P

It was observed that the total number of ovulations and embryos recoveredper donor with Super-OVwere significantly more (P < 0.10) than with the FSH-P. The transferableembryos per donor were marginallyhigher with Super-ffV as compared to FSH-P, but the pregnancy rate was not significantlydifferent (P > 0.05) from each other (36.4 X for FSH-P and 29.8 % for Super-OV).
