A cont ract to p r o d u c e carbon fibre wind t unne l blades for the twin rotors of t h e wind tunnel at Imperial College, London, UK, has been completed by Astec of Draycott, UI~ Astec says t h a t it was awarded t he con tra c t on the basis of its e x p e r i e n c e in manufacturing advanced c o m p o s i t e s t r u c t u r e s . The existing blades in th e tu n n e l had been unable to accomm o d a t e t he required increase in r o t o r speed n e e d e d forhigher air velocities in th e working section. The r e p l a c e m e n t b la d e s were m a n u f a c t u r e d in Astec's 2.5 m d i a m e t e r a u t o c l a v e using a v a r i e t y of c a r b o n fibre p r e p r e g m a t e r i a l s to achieve t he required balance of properties. The resulting parts exhibit excellent strength and stiffness, toget h e r with e n h a n c e d vibration Neil Walker, A C I Fibre- damping characteristics.
