negative kJ produced by a heat pump in a number of installations. For example, at Rouen swimming pool-skating rink the kJ (calories) produced by the condenser of the ice-rink's cooling plant are used to heat the swimming-pool. At Metz malthouse, kJ (calories) released from the condenser of cooling equipment necessary to ensure germination of the barley are used to preheat the kilning air. The heat pumps designed for these purposes use either NH 3 or the halogenated fluids. They are fitted with piston or screw compressors to make it possible to cool or heat the gaseous or liquid phases.

Compressed air filters Cleanable air filters A low resistance air filter suitable for use in air conditioning systems or incorporation into electrical and electronic equipment is available from Altair. Called the VPP/Super, this cleanable filter panel is basically an up-grading of its predecessor the VPP. The 'Super' consists of knitted polypropylene layering sandwiched between a closely woven polypropylene mesh. This complex is held between galvanised, welded steel mesh and the entire panel is bordered by a steel, channel frame. The panel face is corrugated to increase surface area.
A range of compressed air filters has been announced by Domnick Hunter. The filters are claimed to be much more than an update of an existing range and are said to be different in many respects and to have several unique features. One is a bolt-together feature which allows for different grades of filters to be joined without the need for connecting pipes. There is also a fixing kit available for attaching the filters to walls in factories and compressor houses.

Although, for general purposes, a coarse grade element is available, the three main element options cover: particles down to 1/~m and oil/moisture removal; particles down to 0.01 /~m plus oil/moisture removal resulting in technically oil free air; and finally there is a grade that is classified as oil vapour and odour removal. The range is designed for pipework up to 5.08 cm (2 in) in diameter. Domnick Hunter Filters Ltd, Durham Road, Birtley, Co. Durham, UK DH3 2SF
Standards of display The selection of a refrigerating cabinet in which to display frozen merchandise is less simple than one might imagine. To help shopkeepers in their choice, Birds Eye have prepared a booklet entitled 'Choosing a display case'. The pamphlet outlines three main areas for consideration: technical performance; merchandising effectiveness; and cost. Manufacturers were invited to submit details of their products. Birds Eye then assessed the data and scored the cases on a 'tick' basis. Each case was scored separately for each category and awarded one, two or three ticks. The latter denoted the highest performance.
Altair rate the efficiency of their panel at 85% to 5/~m and claim a good dust holding capacity despite the low resistance offered by the panel. At a flow of 1.524 m s -1 (300 fpm) a pressure loss across clean filters of 19.93 N m -2 (0.08 in H20) is claimed as typical. The panels are available in nine sizes ranging from 25.4 cm square to 60.96 cm square (10" square to 24" square). They can be cleaned by shaking, or with compressed air or by vacuuming. If the collected dust is oily, washing with cold
The aluminium, filter housings are protected by an exterior epoxy paint coating and, internally, by a corrosion preventative. Design and construction are Lloyds approved and the working pressure is 1.6 x 106 N m -2 (16 bar) with the standard automatic drain and 2.0 x 10 e N m-2 (20 bar) with the optional manual drain. To ensure that no air by-passes the filter media the elements are encapsulated in an epoxy resin.

In the technical performance category, three ticks meant the case conformed to BS 3053:1971 standards and was marked as doing so. Two ticks denoted that the equipment's performance was in line with the BS 3053:1971 requirements but was not marked
