This book represents the Proceedings of the 2nd IFIP TC-4 working conference held in Hanover in October, 1971 to discuss the techniques involved in computerassisted ECG interpretation. As this review is being prepared effectively two years after publication of the book, which was published approximately two years after the conference, it understandably causes the reviewer to expect that some of the contents of the book are now somewhat out of date. Naturally, this is always a problem with any conference Proceedings but considerable changes have taken place in the field of computer-assisted ECG interpretation in recent times. On the other hand, for those who have little knowledge of the field, the book does provide a good idea of the various approaches which have been adopted in different countries. There are sections on hardware and software, together with papers on the experiences of various users with the programs available in 1971. There is also a useful section on computerised exercise electrocardiography and the application of the computer in other cardiological investigative procedures. There was a considerable amount of discussion at the end of each paper (and elsewhere) and it is evident that a major effort has been put into editing these sections by the editors and session chairmen. This has borne fruit with a meaningful interchange of views after each contribution. In summary, this book provides a useful reference for laboratories interested in such work since it is the most recent review of the field even although it is not entirely up to date. P. W. MACFARLANE
