Daniel Remer Gower Publishing Co. Ltd, 1984, 272 pp., £26.45, ISBN 0-5660251-83 This book sets out to explain software protection law in the USA for writers and publishers of computer software. Not only does it do so in a readable and sometimes amusing way it provides about 100 pages of appendices of suggested contracts, warranties and other legal paraphernalia which are easy to adapt to individual circumstances. Whilst concentrating on the law in the USA it has frequent references to the law in other countries. For example, chapter 13 deals with international law as related to copyright, contracts and trade secrets. Much of what is said about American law would be considered legally sensible in most industrial countries outside of the Soviet bloc. However, where it refers to Acts of Congress, users should check the equivalent legislation of the country in which they are dealing or working. Whilst recommending this book for every software writer's bookshelf, it must be pointed out that the book is not intended to replace lawyers. In many complicated situations a lawyer knowledgeable in software will be invaluable.
