Concrete: Structure, Properties and Materials. P. Kumar Mehta. Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood C l i f f s , NJ 07632. 1986. -(Cloth $43.95). This new text, designed for undergraduate use, is a clear and logical exposition of the current status of concrete as a material of construction. The book is divided into three sections, respectively covering (1) the structure and properties of hardened concrete, (2) concrete materials, mix proportioning, and early-age properties, and (3) advances in concrete technology. The author has done an outstanding job both in selection and organization of material to cover, and in the manner of covering i t . The writing is lucid and easy to follow, with substantial but not overwhelming use of citations to the technical literature. The figures, most of which are taken from current literature, are attractive and well presented. Many carry additional explanations with arguments presented and conclusions drawn in clear and simple language. In conformity with the book's basic function as a text, each chapter has a number of (usually) non-numerical questions for students, and a l i s t of pertinent references is provided as "Suggestions for Further Study". However, the depth of coverage in many topics is such that the book w i l l be of use and interest to graduate students, practicing engineers, and even cement and concrete researchers, as well as to undergraduates. This book is highly recommended. Sidney Diamond Purdue University
