NEWS ITEMS CONFERENCE ON APPLICATIONS OF H I G H VOLTAGE ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

A.E.R.E. Harwell, Didcot, Berkshire, England 2-3 April 1970 The Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group of The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society, in collaboration with the Royal Microscopical Society and the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, is organizing a Conference on Applications of high voltage electron microscopy, to be held at A.E.R.E. Harwell on 2-3 April 1970. The emphasis will be on both the actual and potential application of high voltage microscopy to problems in physical, materials and biological research. It is not intended to discuss the basic electron optical, electrical, or mechanical design of the instrument, but contributions on specimen stages, special devices, or operating conditions for specialised applications are relevant. It is hoped that the subjects discussed will include the imaging of both crystalline and non-crystalline materials, energy losses, the penetration, (including electron channelling effects) radiation damage, metallurgical, materials and biological applications, specimen stages and other special devices. Offers of contributions are solicited and they should be sent to Dr. M. J. Makin, Metallurgy Division, Building 393, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Didcot, Berkshire, as soon as possible, but not later than 20 December 1969. Short (300 word} abstracts of papers will be required by 12 February 1970, and these should be typed on A4 (or quarto) size paper in double-line spacing. Residential accommodation is being arranged in St. Catherine's

College, Oxford and transport will be provided between Oxford and Harwell. Advance registration will be necessary and full details and application forms will be available from the Meetings Office, The Institute of Physics and the Physical Society, 47 Belgrave Square, London, S.W.1. in mid January 1970. CONFERENCE ON NUCLEAR PHYSICS

University of Surrey, Guildford, England 7-9 April 1970 The conference of the Nuclear Physics Sub-Committee of The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society to be held at the University of Surrey, Guildford on 7-9 April 1970, will be on Nuclear Physics. It is intended to cover nuclear structure studies and nuclear reactions over a wide range of energies. The sessions will deal with the following topics: 1) proton and neutron distributions, the nuclear surface, and isotopic-spin effects, 2) clustering, deformations and correlations in nuclei, 3) single-particle strengths in direct and resonance reactions, 4) electromagnetic interactions, and 5) new developments in nuclear theory. A third announcement giving further details regarding contributions and attendance will be made in October/November 1969. In the meantime anyone wishing to be placed on the mailing list for further details should write to the Meetings Officer, The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society, 47 Belgrave Square, London, SWl. 351
