Vol. 18, No. 8, Page 19 cations concerned. Azodicarbonamide is still the most commonly used CBA, although alternatives are under review. However, it is an extremely versatile compound with low toxicity characteristics. Advances in azodicarbonamide technology include a) a wider range of standard grades; b) modification of the physical structure, and c) specifically designed "one-pack" systems. In the blowing of cross-linked PE foam, the amount of heat generated by the blowing agent is of importance since this contributes in part to the foaming process. Also of significance is the particle size distribution of the C.B.A. Activated azodicarbonamide systems are now available which have a range of decomposition temperatures to match processing temperatures of respective polymers. They are also modified to act as nucleating agents, which improves the cell structure. Combinations of azodicarbonamide with other blowing agents have been developed which function synergistically at low temperatures. Azodicarbonamides with decomposition temperatures of between 130-135°C offer suitable alternatives to DNPT in the production of microcellular elastomeric foams. The next conference on this subject is scheduled for 1990/91 immediately preceding the creation of the single European Market. (John Shelton)
