Congress Announcement: EMCSR l ~ t ) The Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies announces the 10th European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Reasearch, to be held April 17-20, 1990 at the University of Vienna, Austria. Plenary lectures and symposia are scheduled on: General Systems Methodology; Fuzzy Sets and Systems; Designing and Systems; Humanity, Architecture, and Conceptualization, Cybernetics in Biology and Medicine; Cybernetics of Socio-Economic Systems; The Management and Cybernetics of Organizations; Innovation Systems in Business and Administration; Robotics and Flexible Manufacturing; Systems Engineering and Aritificial Intelligence for Peace Research; Communication and Computers; Software Development for Systems Theory; Artificial Intelligence; Parallel Distributed Processing in Man and Machine; Art and Artificial Intelligence; and Impacts of Artificial Intelligence. Expert Systems 89 Expert Systems 89, the Ninth Annual Technical Conference of the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Expert Systems will be held at the Metropole Hotel in Brighton from 12-14 December, 1989. It will be preceded by one and two day tutorials in the same location on Monday and Tuesday, 11 and 12 December 1989. The conference will focus on both theoretical aspects of expert systems and their practical applications, it aims to bring together the academic and business communities involved in research and exploitation of expert systems. "*:lere will be a number of invited overview lectures and an exhibition demonstrating a wide range ot software and hardware products. Submissions are invited on either practical or theoretical work currently in progress or completed. Papers may consider any area of expert systems or relevant work in computing, artificial intelligence and the other cognitive sciences, The conference will address fundamental technical problems in knowledge engineering as well as highlighting principles, tools and guidelines for all phases of expert system development and maintenance. Papers covering applications from business and commerce are also sought, and the committee wttl welcome papers drawing lessons from practical experience. The conference's past proceedings are a collection of the best of expert systems research. ES89 will b~ild on this susbtamial achievement. Full papers not exceeding 5000 words should be typed in double spacing on A4 paper and three copies .~hould be submitted by Friday 9 June 1989. The first sheet of each copy should give the title, names of the authors, a brief ab,,trect and a list of keywords to help in the assignment of referees. The second sheet of the paper should repeat the title and abstract and the paper itself should start on this page. The authors' names should not appear on this page
