CONGRESS International

REPORT

Congress on Technology and Blindness Barbizon-Plaza Hotel New York City

18-22 July 1962 Auspices: American Foundation for the Blind, with the financial and technical assistance organizations

of many other

THE Congress was divided into five panels: man-machine systems; living systems; sound recording and reproduction; adapted and special purpose devices; and, finally, a summary plenary session, Contributors were present from all those various countries which had individuals known to be contributing to this field, about twelve countries in all. The scientific sessions (“living systems”), under the chairmanship of Dr. W. GREY WALTER (Bristol, England), covered such topics as: information flow in vision, organic reconstruction, brain functions in vision, neuromimes, utilization of remaining sensory channels, principles and limitations of auditory travel, tactile and kinesthetic research, direct cortical input, and electroencephalographic studies of the blind-and related topics. Discussion was very active and fruitful-and the interpersonal contact was of great value. The major aim of the conference, to bring together technical and scientific people on a common problem, was quite profitably achieved. Very little physiological material was presented, however, which was not already in the literature-perhaps reflecting scientific neglect of this area-though the reviews were generally quite sophisticated. The proceedings will be published, together with reports from the technical sessions, and they should prove to be extremely valuable guides to the present state of the multiplicity of arts which go to make up this important field of applied sensory physiology.
