Contributor CVs Professor Poul-Erik Petersen Responsible Officer for Oral Health, WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Dr Petersen is formerly Professor of Community Dentistry and elected Dean of the School of Dentistry, University of Copenhagen. He was also Vice-Director of the School of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen. He has several years of experience working for the WHO Regional Office for Europe as a Consultant. He is well known for his work as a Director for the WHO Collaborating Centre for Community Oral Health Programmes and Research. He worked closely with numerous WHO Collaborating Centres in the field of oral health and has assisted ministries of health, health authorities and health care planners throughout the world. In addition to Denmark, he has studied in the USA and the UK. He has an academic background encompassing dentistry, public health and sociology, combined with broad international experience. He has worked in community oral health research, enhancement of public health in universities worldwide, health systems development as well as in planning and implementation of community health projects in an extensive number of industrialised countries, countries with economies in transition and in developing countries. He has an extensive list of about 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications within epidemiology, health sociology, health systems research, disease prevention and health promotion, and international health. At WHO Headquarters, He is Chief of the WHO Global Oral Health Programme. Since 2002, he has worked hard to increase the global awareness of oral health and oral disease; he is a real integrationist as he works for incorporation of prevention of oral disease and oral health promotion into national health policies and programmes. He has been a key person in the efforts leading to the adoption by Member States of the World Health Assembly Resolution 2007 on a global action plan for oral health.

Professor Miguel Angel González Moles MD, PhD Miguel Gonzales Moles is qualified in Medicine and Surgery, and has a PhD from the University of Granada, Spain. He is Specialist in Stomatology, and Associate Professor (Oral Medicine), in the University of Granada. Also Director of the Research Laboratory of the School of Dentistry, University of Granada he is currently Leader of the CTS 392 Research Project (Andalusian Regional Government), principal investigator for two projects funded by the Spanish Health Ministry and collaborating investigator in three research projects funded by the Spanish Government. Author of a book on Oral Precancer and Cancer (published by Editorial Advances Medicodentales, Spain) he has published 64 articles in impact journals and has been awarded 12 research and teaching prizes. Dr Tim Hodgson BDS, MRCP (UK), FDS RCS (Eng), FGDP (UK) Tim Hodgson is consultant in Oral Medicine and Clinical Lead of the units of Oral Medicine, Special Care Dentistry and Facial Pain, at the Eastman Dental Hospital UCLH Foundation NHS Trust. He gained BDS from Guy’s Dental School in 1989. He returned to the United Medical and Dental schools in 1990 to study Medicine. It was during this period that he commenced research on the oral manifestations of HIV infection in Africa. Mr Cyrus J. Kerawala MBBS (Hons), BDS (Hons), FDSRCS, FRCS Ed, FRCS (Max-Fac) Cyrus Kerawala graduated with an honours degree in medicine from the University of London (St. George’s Hospital) and in dentistry (The Royal London Hospital). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh. After experience in general surgery and neurosurgery Cyrus Kerawala spent five years of specialist training in the North East of England. Cyrus Kerawala was appointed as a Consultant and spent eight years at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford UK and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke UK before moving to the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. His surgical interests concentrate on mucosal and cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck, particularly reconstruction of the post-ablative defect. Dr Carlos Madrid MD, MSc, DDS, PhD Carlos Madrid is head of the Service of Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry of the Department of Ambulatory Care and Community Medicine. Professor Jukka H. Meurman MD, PhD, DOdont Jukka Meurman is Professor of oral infectious diseases in the University of Helsinki, Finland, and head physician at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases, Helsinki University Central Hospital. He trained in dentistry and medicine and surgery. He has studied for over 30 years in oral infections and systemic health, with both national and international recognition. His research interests have also focused on oral yeast infections and he introduced the concept of probiotics in oral medicine and dentistry. Professor Miguel Angel González Moles MD, PhD Miguel Gonzales Moles is qualified in Medicine and Surgery, and has a PhD from the University of Granada, Spain. He is Specialist in Stomatology, and Associate Professor (Oral Medicine), in the University of Granada. Also Director of the Research Laboratory of the School of Dentistry, University of Granada he is currently Leader of the CTS 392 Research Project (Andalusian Regional Government), principal investigator for two projects funded by the Spanish Health Ministry and collaborating investigator in three research projects funded by the Spanish Government. Dr Tim Hodgson BDS, MRCP (UK), FDS RCS (Eng), FGDP (UK) Tim Hodgson is consultant in Oral Medicine and Clinical Lead of the units of Oral Medicine, Special Care Dentistry and Facial Pain, at the Eastman Dental Hospital UCLH Foundation NHS Trust. He gained BDS from Guy’s Dental School in 1989. He returned to the United Medical and Dental schools in 1990 to study Medicine. It was during this period that he commenced research on the oral manifestations of HIV infection in Africa. He was appointed specialist registrar in Oral Medicine at the Eastman in 1999 and has subsequently spent further periods in Malawi. He was awarded an honorary FGDP(UK) in March 2008 in recognition of developing Structured Clinical Reasoning for the new MJDF. He has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr Rosie Shotts BDS, FDS RCS (Eng), MBBS (Hons), MRCGP, DCH, DRCOG, DFFP Rosie Shotts qualified in both medicine and dentistry in UK and worked in both maxillofacial surgery and oral medicine. She is currently a General Medical Practitioner partner in Chesham, Bucks UK, but continues a strong interest in oral health and disease, also working part-time in Head and Neck cancer at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust unit, London, UK. Dr Shotts has contributed chapters to several major textbooks of oral diseases, and has published a number of peer-reviewed papers. Speaker CVs Professor Jose V. Professor Pedro Diz Dios MD, DDS, PhD Perdo Diz Dios is qualified in Medicine and Dentistry, and is a Specialist in Stomatology at Santiago de Compostela University, Spain and University Specialist in Oral Medicine and Surgery at La Coruña University. Dr Vinod K Joshi BDS, DRDRCS, FDSRCPS, FDSRCSE Vinod Joshi qualified in Dentistry at the University of Singapore and worked in Malaysia briefly before moving to the UK to pursue his postgraduate training in Leeds and the Eastman Dental Institute. He gained his Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (Glasgow) and his accreditation in Restorative Dentistry. He is the Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield and at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bradford at which he set up and developed the Restorative Dentistry Oncology Clinics. He is the founder and chief executive of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, which provides patient advocacy and support for mouth, throat and other head & neck cancer patients. The charity is also involved with increasing awareness of mouth cancers and organises the annual Mouth Cancer Walk in London. Mr Nicholas Kalavrezos BDS, MBBS, FFDRCSI, FRCS (max), MD Nick Kalavrezos started his maxillofacial career in the University Hospital in Zurich where he completed his thesis in the management of craniofacial trauma. In the UK he completed training with emphasis in head and neck oncology and microvascular surgery in Liverpool, Mount Vernon and St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital. Nicholas was appointed Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at University College London Hospitals with a sub-specialty interest in oral oncology and microvascular reconstruction. His clinical practice includes also surgical treatment of salivary gland neoplasms as well as thyroid surgery. He is honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Whittington Hospital. His main research interests are the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the management of advanced head and neck cancer and the applied interface between new technologies and conventional surgery. Mr Cyrus J. Kerawala MBBS (Hons), BDS (Hons), FDSRCS, FRCS Ed, FRCS (Max-Fac) Cyrus Kerawala graduated with an honours degree in medicine from the University of London (St. George’s Hospital) and in dentistry (The Royal London Hospital). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh. After experience in general surgery and neurosurgery Cyrus Kerawala spent five years of specialist training in the North East of England. Cyrus Kerawala was appointed as a Consultant and spent eight years at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford UK and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke UK before moving to the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. His surgical interests concentrate on mucosal and cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck, particularly reconstruction of the post-ablative defect. His main research areas concern free tissue transfer, marginal control of disease, management of the neck and the role of chemokine receptor CCR7.

Dr Carlos Madrid MD, MSc, DDS, PhD Carlos Madrid is head of the Service of Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry of the Department of Ambulatory Care and Community Medicine. University of Lausanne. Medical School, Switzerland. Qualifying in Dentistry at Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, he graduated in oral surgery the same year at the Institute of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. He earned his MD and PhD at the Medical School of Toulouse III and MSc at the University of Nancy Medical School, France. He is associate professor of the University of Toulouse. He graduated in Acute and Chronic Pain Control (MSc) at Faculty of Medecine Necker Enfants Malades, Université René Descartes, Paris, France. His present research interest is salivary gland sparing with intensity modulated radiotherapy. His major clinical interest is the bidirectional relationship between systemic and oral diseases. Professor Jukka H. Meurman MD, PhD, DOdont Jukka Meurman is Professor of oral infectious diseases in the University of Helsinki, Finland, and head physician at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases, Helsinki University Central Hospital. He trained in dentistry and medicine and surgery. He has studied for over 30 years in oral infections and systemic health, with both national and international recognition. His research interests have also focused on oral yeast infections and he introduced the concept of probiotics in oral medicine and dentistry. He is former vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine in his university. Professor Meurman has been invited to and he has honorary doctorates in Louis Pasteur University, Karolinska institute and Medical University of Plovdiv. Professor Tim Newton BA, PhD Tim Newton is Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry at GKT Dental Institute and Head of the Oral Health, Workforce & Education Research Group, KCL, London UK. A chartered Health Psychologist, he gained his PhD at the University of Liverpool, where he was research assistant, being then appointed Senior Lecturer at Salford University College. He has been Visiting Professor of Dentistry, Otago Community Trust, University of Otago, New Zealand. He has published articles and books on stress and the dental profession, workforce planning in dentistry, and patients’ perceptions of the process and outcome of treatment and has received the Giddon Award for distinguished research in the behavioural sciences. Dr Christopher M Nutting BSc, MBBS, FRCP, FRCR, MD, ECMO Chris Nutting is Consultant and Reader in Clinical Oncology, Head of Head and Neck Unit, Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK. He trained in Oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital and St. Bartholomews Hospital, and was awarded his Medical Doctorate from The Institute of Cancer Research (University of London). He gained specialist clinical training in New York and the University of Michigan, USA and a number of European Centres. Dr Nutting specializes in the management of head and neck, thoracic and pelvic malignancy and has a specialist interest in the application of high-technology radiotherapy techniques and
chemoradiation for a number of tumour types. He is an international expert in Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), and other conformal radiation techniques. He also has an interest in chemoradiation techniques applied to head and neck and lung cancer. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles and been awarded several National Research Prizes. Professor Stephen R. Porter BSc, MD, PhD, FDS RCS, FDS RCSE Stephen Porter is Director, and Professor of Oral Medicine in the UCL Eastman Dental Institute London. Professor Porter graduated in dentistry and biochemistry from the University of Glasgow, gained his MBChB, MD and PhD from the University of Bristol and is a Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England. His research interests centre upon the oral aspects of viral infection and the aetiology and detection of potentially malignant oral disease. He has published extensively. Dr Judith Evelyn Raber-Durlacher DDS, PhD Judith Raber-Durlacher graduated from the Dental School of the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. She practiced general dentistry and was lecturer at the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA). She provided oral care to paediatric cancer patients at the Emma Children’s Hospital. She earned her PhD at the University of Amsterdam. She was Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA and Visiting Professor at the Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, USA. Presently she is affiliated to the Department of Haematology, Leiden Medical University Center, the Netherlands and to the Department of Periodontology, ACTA. She has lectured on oral complications in cancer nationally and internationally, (co)authored numerous publications, contributed to textbooks and is a regular reviewer for scientific journals. She is Immediate Past President of the International Society of Oral Oncology and serves in the MASCC/ISOO Mucositis and Oral Care Study Groups. Professor Simon Rogers BDS, MBChB (Hons), FSD RCS (Eng), FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Max), MD Simon Rogers is Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at the University Hospital Aintree, Professor at Edgehill University, and Honorary Reader, University of Liverpool, UK. He is part of the multidisciplinary head and neck team and specialises in oral and oropharyngeal cancer and microvascular free tissue reconstruction. He has an interest is in health related quality of life following oral cancer. He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his research into the relationship between function and quality of life following primary surgery for oral and oropharyngeal cancer. He has several ongoing HRQOL studies, has published widely on this topic, and has been invited to speaker at many national and international scientific meeting. He has organised several International HRQOL workshops hosted at Liverpool. Professor Crispian Scully CBE MD, PhD, MDS, MRCS, BSc, FDSRCS, FDSRCPS, FFDRCSI, FDSRCSE, FRCPath, FMedSci, FHEA, FUCL, DSc, DChD, DMed (HC), Dr HC Crispian Scully is Director of Special Projects at the UCL-Eastman Dental Institute; Professor of Special Care Dentistry, University College London, UK; and President-elect of International Academy of Oral Oncology. He has written 30 and edited 11 books, written >150 book chapters and has >880 papers cited on MEDLINE plus >300 others. He is Editor of Oral Oncology, Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, and Associate Editor of Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry.

He served a Fellowship in Oral Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington D.C and was then appointed Professor in Oral Pathology at the University Hospital Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. At present, he is head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology of the Vrije Universiteit University Medical Center/ACTA, Amsterdam. Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya OBE, BDS (Cey), FDSRCS (Eng & Edin), PhD (Glasg), DSc (HC) Saman Warnakulasuriya holds the chair in Oral Medicine and Experimental Oral Pathology at King’s College London, UK. He is an honorary consultant and head of the academic unit in Oral Medicine at King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Hospital Trusts. He is an authority on global aspects of risk factors for oral cancer having conducted several field surveys both in Asia and Northern Africa. He is currently the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer and Precancer. His research interests are developing tumour and genetic markers for diagnosis, examining risks for oral cancer in different populations, the delivery of interventional programmes directed at cessation of tobacco and areca nut usage and conducting clinical trials on the management of oral leukoplakia.
