Compressibility tests are reported and the construction method, incl~dimg soil compec~ion, is outlined. 796150 CONTROL AND DRAINAGE OF WATER IN MINE TAILINGS DAMS Bauer, G F In: Proc World COm~ess on Water in Mining and Unde~groumd Works (SIAMOS-78), Granada, spain, 18-22 Sept 1978, V2, Pl125-1137. Publ Granada: Asociacion Nacional de I~genieros de Minas, 1978 Discusses the design of a control system which will provide an adequate factor of safety, with particular reference tc seepage and liquefaction problems. Dam construction methods, use of drainage filters, amd monitoring of water pressures within amd beneath the dam are considered briefly.

Describes the hydroelectric project started in 1978 at Hasimga on the T a m river in Eemya. Part i deals with site selection an~ investigation, Part 2 with design and mod~11~ng of the dam anl associated structures.

A new foundation method is described in which col~r~ manufactured in situ by mixing unslaked lime with soft clay are used to sUPport light structures amd road embankments. The 1~m~ colcan also be used as lateral s u l ~ in excavatioms instead of sheet piled walls. Methods are presented for calculation of total amd differential settlements as well as the consolidation rate.

The a ~ s i s of the results makes it possible to propose a simple empirical method for forecasting free displacements of the soil at the completion of construction, and their evolution during the consolidation of the ccml~essible stratum. 7~i~8 ~

This paper describes a series of tests made on instrumented t~bular steel piles in the field to examine the mechamlsm of load transfer from piles in stiff clay. The piles were Jacked into the ground and during installation detailed measurements were made of the vertical movements of the soil near the grotu~i surface and at told-pile level ar~ of the dlstribution of load in the pile shafts.
