FOCUS US: Continental Carbon – carbon black Continental Carbon (a wholly-owned subsidiary within the China Synthetic Rubber group) has agreed to invest $1.66 M in upgrading pollution control equipment at its Ponca City, OK, carbon black plant under the terms of a consent order from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality. If, by the end of 2005, the plant fails to meet the agreed pollution control standards, Continental Carbon will be liable to pay a lump-sum penalty of $56,000 plus fines accumulating at the rate of $1000 per day. US: Immix – plastics colorants Immix LLC is a newcomer to the plastic colorants industry. Its plant at Holland, MI, with a floor area of 10,000 sq ft, opened last June, making colour concentrates for polyethylene and polypropylene. Most of its customers are manufacturers of moulded automobile components. The company plans to take on extra staff in 2005 and is considering making colour concentrates for polystyrene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polycarbonate and nylon. US: Tri-Valley & Trans-Western – ground calcium carbonate Alpha Minerals & Chemicals LLC has been created as a 50:50 joint venture between Tri-Valley Corp and TransWestern Materials LLC. Both companies are based in California, Tri-Valley at Bakersfield, TransWestern at San Diego. The main objective of the new joint venture will be to reopen the Monarch mine in eastern Kern county (California) in order to supply customers with high grade calcium carbonate (typically 9799% CaCO3 and GE brightness of at least 96%. Alpha has rights to an estimated 400 M tonnes of high grade calcium carbonate and the Kern county deposit is of unknown depth. Radiant Color and its US-based sister company, DayGlo Color, are leaders in the world market for fluorescent pigments and dispersions. Announcing the appointment, Mr Luud Dumoulin (Commercial Director for Radiant Color) said: “Cornelius possesses both experience and expertise of our industry, as well as being an established distributor across a number of widespread market sectors. Evro Resurs to expand its natural food colorants business beyond Russia Evro Resurs (of Saint Petersburg) is the largest Russian producer of

Microfine & Fordamin merge to create Minelco Specialities Minelco Specialities has been created by the merger of Microfine Minerals Ltd and Fordamin Co. Rockwood buys Hamburger Rockwood Pigments has acquired Hamburger Color (of Pennsylvania) for an undisclosed sum. Hamburger has been one of the foremost companies in North America in developing the use of iron oxide pigments and liquid iron oxide colour suspensions for the cement and concrete industries. Rockwood is the world’s second largest supplier of iron oxide pigments, with plants in the US, Germany, Italy and China. The company states that Hamburger’s plant at King of Prussia, PA will serve as its key eastern US-based liquids production facility, helping it to better supply the concrete and landscape sectors with additional products.
