C O U N C I L O N D E N T A L T H E R A P E U T I C S L IS T S P R O D U C T S “N O T A C C E P T A B L E F O R A .D .R .” A list o f commercial products not a ccepted by the Council on Dental Therapeutics, with an annotated bibliography o f publications con cerning them which have appeared in THE JOURNAL during the past seventeen years. M an y o f the most interesting and im portant reports o f the C ouncil on Dental Therapeutics were published many years ago. It is suggested that the original articles b e consulted when it is possible and convenient, since it is obviously im possible to include all the desirable in form ation in this bibliography. T he notations in the bibliography refer to the publications cited. Some o f the abuses m entioned may have been eliminated since they were reported in T h e J o u r n a l . In reading the bibliography, it should be remem bered that all preparations which contain therapeutically effective amounts o f acetophenetidin, acetanilid, bromides, aminopyrine, antipyrine or cathartics are potentially dangerous. T hey should not be sold directly to the public unless the trade packages and all advertising carry com plete warning state ments. Since the use o f adequate warn ing statements w ould probably result in marked decrease in the use by the public o f unaccepted proprietary mixtures con taining these classes o f drugs, purveyors o f such mixtures are not willing to in clude sufficient warnings and are, as a result, periodically at w ar with regula tory bodies which are trying to protect the public. T h e follow ing ingredients are co n sidered by the Council to be im proper for use in dentifrices, because o f un due abrasiveness, a significant toxicity or the prevalence o f sensitivity to them: potassium chlorate, sodium perborate, pum ice, silica, alum, creosote, cinchona bark, charcoal, salicylic acid, phenol and orris root. T h e follow ing ingredients,

sometimes included in unaccepted denti frices, appear to be useless and have, in some instances, provided the basis for misleading therapeutic claims: enjetine, zinc chloride, the naphthols, papain and calcium and magnesium peroxide. T h e phrase “ abuse o f the dentist” appears in connection with some o f the references. This means that statements which tend to make the public believe that dentists generally recom m end or ap prove o f the product have been dissemi nated in advertising fo r the product. In some instances, the layman is told that his dentist will probably advise him to use the product. Some advertisements em ploy pictures o f dentists, and put mis leading therapeutic advice into their mouths. This is also an abuse o f the dentist. O n e or m ore symbols appear after each reference. T heir meanings are: * A report authorized by the C ouncil on Dental Therapeutics o r the A .D .A . Bureau o f Chemistry. J A notice o f judgm ent published by the U . S. F ood and D ru g Administra tion. # A stipulation between the' distrib utor and the Federal T rad e Commission. f A com plaint issued by the Federal Trade Commission. * * A cease and desist order issued by the Federal T rad e Commission.
