Testing filters to IS0 standards Tests on filtration components to IS0 standard can be carried out by equipment manufacturers without having to send them to independent laboratories for evaluation, lrsing the computerised test bench at IFTS. Manufacturers are increasingly looking for higher levels of filter performance: two to three absolute microns for hydraulic power transmission in aeronautics, metallurgy and robotics equipment; three to five absolute microns for gasoline filtering. and up to 10 microns for machine tools and agricultural machinery. Working at a speed of between 10 to 35011min at pressures up to 150 bar, the test system can be usd on any kind of industrial filter, including new types of cartridge filter made from cellulose

Counting microorganisms A new method for estimating the number of microorganisms in water, has been published by BSI. Designated BS 6068: Section 4.5: 1989 Method for the enumeration of viable microorganisms: colony count by inoculation in or on a nutrient the culture medium. agar standard gives a method for enumeraiton of viable microorganisms in all types of water by counting the colonies formed in or on a nutrient agar culture medium after aerobic incubation at 37”and or 22°C. This method of examination can be applied to ali types of water. No current standard is superceded. This section of BS 6068 is identical with IS0 6222: 1988. Price is 25.20 to non-members. BSI Sales. Removing sand Two high pressure (100 bar G) TC 300-4 cartridge filters are being supplied by Stockdale to Shell UK, for use on an offshore gas platform. They will remove sand from the prowater/condensate cess stream. The free-standing filters are backwashable, coded to BS 5500 Cat.1 and will be on alternate duty. fibre. glass fibre or stainless steel mesh. As well as checking a filter’s load loss in accordance ith IS0 3986, it also measures resistance to bursting pressures (IS0 2941) resistancs to pulsations (IS0 3724). and Beta ratios and life expectancy (IS0 4572). All test procedures are con-

trolled by a PLC which adjusts and records test parameters on a continuous basis. By these means, the system allows operational conditions. particularly those relating to fluid speed and temperature, to remain constant to within a factor of 1%. IFTS. rue Marcel Pagnol. Sutcliffe Speakman has purchased Caird & Rayner-Bravac for c1.4m cash, to expand ifs environmental engineering interests in water and effluent treatment. Last year, Caird & RaynerBravac ceiebrate 100 years of providing desalination and water treatment equipment to British and foreign naval fleets and mercantile marine, and in

Water treatment award Applications are invited for the 1990 Chemviron Carbon Award, a major prize presented every two years for outstanding contributions to the field of physical and chemical water treatment for work originating in Europe. Entries must be submitted by April 30. The winning candidate will receive a cash award of $10,000 and a commemorative trophy at a ceremony to be held at the Aquatech ‘SO exhibition in Amsterdam in Sep!ember. The 1986 winner was Jan Peter van der l-lock. a research scientist at the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, for his work on processes to remove nitrates from ground water and make it drinkable. In 1988 it was a team of four researchers working in Switzerland who won the award for creating a new process of operating activated carbon

using carbon f ines for decolorising or duties could Cleodorising r educe labour and maincosts by installing a t enance depth filter in kCalsep Fibrotex process instead t heir recovery filters,’ stated Dr CIf traditional (sraeme Pearce, the comprocess engineering I3any.s nanager. at the recent I-ondon Kalsep seminar. ‘As an added advantage,’ he said, ‘there would be reduced amounts of effluent needing disposal.’ The filters are said to offer many advantages to manufacturers using carbon fines and can process feedstreams containing up to 1% carbon in one single stage. The resultant fktrate is visually clear. The fibrous element of the filter can be backwashed and wrung out when loading reaches a predetermined level. Kalsep, Wey House, Langley Quay. E%rnfor UMIST To support the work of UMIST’s Environmental Technology Centre, Simon Engineering has endowed it with fAm. The Simon Environmental Technology Centre. as it wilt now be known, teaches an MSc course in this, area and undertakes research into waste water treatment, waste disposal. atmospheric dispersion and air quality, as well as the risk assessment of industrial hazards. The endowment is to be used to enhance the centre’s teaching and research programme in the field of waste water treatment. It forms part of the recently launched UMIST Millennium Project which has already raised f5m from industry for a variety of projects. UMlSx PO Box 88. Manchesfer M6l? 1QD.
