Cray Valley buys ITIP, Dynomer IN

FURTHER moves to strengthen its global presence, Cray Valley has acquired ITIP Srl, Italy’s third largest producer of gel-coats, and Dynomer, a Malaysian manufacturer of unsaturated polyester. The terms of the deals have not been disclosed. ITIP, based in Zibido San Giacomo, near Milan, is said to hold a 15% share of the Italian gel-coat market. It also manufactures bonding pastes, mastics and pigment paste, and distributes other products for the composites industry. This acquisition marks a further step in Cray Valley’s European expansion. Last September the company opened its third European gel-coat facility in Miranda de Ebro, Spain, joining its existing plants in Gravigny, and France, Stallingborough, UK. Dynomer is based in Pasir Gudang and was acquired from

Nordkemi. The sale of Dynomer took place on 1 March. A subsidiary of Dyno ASA, Dynomer has annual sales of 820 million and employs 86 people. It operates in the coatings and unsaturated polyester resins markets in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. Nordkemi is reported to be the world’s largest producer of formaldehyde based resin systems and is a holding company for Neste Chemicals and the chemical activities of Dyno ASA. The sale of Dynomer is a further step in Nordkemi’s strategy is to concentrate on industrial adhesive resins and coating intermediates. This latest move follows Nordkemi’s sale of Neste Polyester to Ashland, which was announced in February (see Reinforced Plastics, March 2001, page 10).

and THE CURRENT status longer term requirements of the UK composites industry are being investigated under a study being run by NPL, in conjunction with NetComposites. The study, a contract awarded by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Chemicals Directorate (Innovation and Skills Partnership), will aim to establish both the current competitive position and the longer term requirements of the UK’s reinforced plastics industry. The resulting report will recommend the future research and business approaches which will be needed to maintain and improve its competitiveness. The review will be undertaken through a focused

approach to leading players such as trade associations, research organizations, major suppliers and end-users, supported by a more widely distributed survey. Industry bodies such as the British Plastics Federation (BPF) Composites Group, the Composites Processors Association (CPA) and the Nottingham University Composites Club will be supporting the work. The results will be reported in September. All industry players are invited to participate in the survey, which will be available on the Web or via the post on request. For further information visit the NPL and NetComposites websites: www.npl.co.uk/cog/ and www.netcomposites.co.uk.
