The overall rate of unexpected malignancy was 3.3% (n = 17) with most cases being endometrioid adenocarcinoma. Fifty-seven out of 514 (11.1%) hysterectomy specimens had NPA. Fifty percent of subjects with chronic pain as a primary preoperative diagnosis and 45% of subjects with AUB had NPA. Conclusion: The overall discrepancy rate between potentially confirmable preoperative diagnoses and final pathology was w10%, with discrepancies varying by diagnosis. Less discrepancy was associated with fibroids and adenomyosis, but higher discrepancy observed for cervical dysplasia. The overall rate of unexpected malignancy was higher than anticipated. Future studies should prospectively study quality improvement initiatives that would further improve our preoperative clinical accuracy in order to provide more precise counseling prior to hysterectomy. The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS) sponsored the foundation of the first multicenter research network for fellows in 2008, the aims of which were to: 1) Create an environment for fellows to participate in collaborative research and conduct multicenter studies as primary investigators; 2) Enhance fellows’ knowledge and skills in study design, implementation of multicenter studies, data management and statistical analysis; and 3) Provide an environment for fellows to develop professional relationships that will be sustained after graduation. As alumni of the Fellows’ Pelvic Research Network (FPRN), our aim was to create a similar research network for junior investigators to continue to perform collaborative research. Materials and Methods: To accomplish this goal, we assembled a consortium of five academic institutions with diverse geographic representation across the United States, all of which have fellowshiptrained specialists in FPMRS, and none of which are participants in existing research networks. Governance of this research consortium includes a Steering Committee, a Financial Oversight Committee, two statisticians, and an administrative director. The Steering Committee is responsible for selecting and approving topics for investigation; overseeing protocol development; participating in data analysis, presentation, and publication; approving financial resource utilization; and maintaining and assuring compliance with the network’s policies and procedures, by-laws, and applicable regulations. The Financial Oversight Committee oversees the administrative finances of the network and annually reports findings to the Steering Committee. Because this research network is comprised of junior investigators, we have an Advisory Board of three senior investigators with diverse experience in multicenter research network organization and participation. Administrative oversight is provided by a non-physician Administrative Director proficient in research management and operation at the Coordinating Center. Concept proposals are presented to the Steering Committee, and if approved, protocol development ensues. Full protocols must be approved through a formalized review process by the Steering Committee before being submitted for funding and IRB

approval, and the committee prioritizes the order of approved protocols to be undertaken by the network. Results: Since our inception three months ago, we have initiated one protocol and IRB approval is underway at all 5 participating sites. Conclusion: In conclusion, formation of a collaborative research network amongst junior investigators in FPMRS is feasible. Further, the FPRN established by SGS six years ago has achieved its three aims, as evidenced by the formation of this research consortium of junior investigators. Non-Oral Poster 85 Learning Theories Applied to Micro-Teaching Moments in the Operating Room Sutkin G,1 Littleton EB,2 Kanter S.2 1OB/GYN/RS, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; 2University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Objectives: The majority of a surgical trainee’s education happens in the Operating Room (OR) while operating alongside more senior surgeons. Learning Theories from the General Education literature can provide insight into Intraoperative Teaching (IOT). The purpose of this study was to examine three instances of surgical teaching through the lens of three theories of learning to generate new knowledge about how we teach our residents and fellows in the OR. Materials and Methods: The data in this study is taken from 5 live surgeries in which IOT was caught on film, transcribed and coded, and used to cue interviews with the participants. We paid particular attention to the participants’ verbal and non-verbal behaviors and interactions, as well as the surgical context of the IOT moment, in order to explain what worked from a pedagogic standpoint and why. We chose 3 rich, yet common teaching moments each lasting only a few seconds for further analysis, and applied important aspects of 3 historical Learning Theories: Information Processing, Situated Learning, and Expansive Learning, to understand their different parts. Results: We identified approximately 400 organic IOT moments from the 5 surgeries. IOT consists of multiple discreet utterances, gestural movements, and actions that were easily organized into short ‘‘teaching exchanges.’’ These instructive IOT exchanges were rich yet efficient, usually lasting only a few seconds. Each teaching exchange was a pair of actions and/or speech, alternating between the attending and trainee that resulted in some guidance from the attending. Exchanges seemed to circumscribe one task at a time, emphasize one teaching point, and focus on precise and fine-grained actions and moments within the surgical case. In one paradigmatic teaching moment, an attending, using a pen, leads a resident in a short back-and-forth about making an abdominal incision. The IOT moment contains the right information for learning and assessment, the trainee’s participation as a surgeon, and the re-purposing of a pen as the attending adapts it for her pedagogic goals. Conclusion: IOT exchanges when viewed at a micro level appear as moment by moment cooperation between attending and learner to uncover the resident’s learning needs so that the attending may simultaneously provide instruction and ensure the forward progress of the case. We suspect the expert teaching surgeon utilizes these teaching moments to plan a few steps ahead of the trainee, tailor the instruction to the learning needs, and move the surgical case forward safely.
