al digital output. The output is proportional to the peak signal amplitude in the gate and the output mode switch can select either a logarithmic or linear output. This feature may be useful in transducer analysis applications where it is desirable to provide greater amplification for low amplitude signals that appear in the transducer lobes.

Endevco's Dynamic Instrument Division have designed a triaxial accelerometer with replaceable sensing elements. The model 726A is a small, medium range accelerometer which provides field or factory replacement of individual sensing elements.

SI (Systems and Instrumentation) Limited's ultrasonic thickness meter, the UTM-100 weighs only 220g and measures 63 x 100 x 28 mm. The meter has been designed for the thickness gauging of pipes, plates and boilers and features a thickness range of 1 to 200mm with a resolution of 0.1 mm. The instrument has a four digit display and can be used for thickness measurement of a wide variety of materials. With objects of known thickness, the UTM-100 can also be used to determine acoustic velocity of the test material.

Two colour pyrometers 'Two colour' radiation pyrometers which, it is claimed, can tolerate a 95% attenuation in the intensity of the radiation received and still measure temperature accurately, have been developed by Ircon, Incorporated. The Modline R Series instruments cover four temperature ranges: 700-1400°C, 900-1600°C, 1100-2000°C and 1500-3500°C. The instruments measure temperature from the ratio of intensities at two different wavelengths. Dust or smoke in the sight path, dirty viewing windows and emittance changes have no effect on temperature measurement provided they effect both wavelengths equally.

In use, the R Series pyrometers require no optical or electronic adjustment. The sensing head (seen on the right in Fig. 3) contains an achromatic lens assembly, a beam splitter, a fibreoptics mixer and a thermostatted detector containing two silicon elements and logarithmic amplifers which perform the ratio action.

Reactor Experiments, Incorporated have produced a Criticality Dosimeter (CD) similar in size to a film badge. The CD badge is hermetically sealed in plastic and can be attached to clothing with its spring loaded clip. The device has been designed for personnel working in reactors, fueld handling and processing plants where there is a possibility of accident criticality. A special CD for area monitoring is also available. The unit has a stainless steel mounting plate and contains a TLD for gamma-ray dose measurement.

Automatic mapping Reimers Consultants has developed a system for underwater ultrasonic thickness measurements. The Automatic Ultrasonic Thickness Measuring and Mapping System (AUTAMAP) is microprocessor based and has a thickness range of 3.8 mm to 50.8 mm resolution.

P.W. Allen and Company have introduced a portable ultraviolet light weighing 550g and measuring 160 x 90 x 30mm. The unit has been designed around a single four watt blacklight tube powered by five HP11 type batteries.

The diver need only position the transducer and the system can produce an automatic statistical analysis and evaluation of 1000 local readings in 10s. The standard AUTAMAP system requires removal of scale and growth from the test surface and an estimate of paint thickness if paint is present.
