TIlE effect o f t h e t r e a t m e n t o f glass fibre surface o n t h e f o r m a t i o n o f a p o l y s t y r e n e film, w h e n t h e m o n o m e r is p o l y m e r i z e d in c o n t a c t w i t h t h e surface, h a s b e e n i n v e s t i g a t e d . I t h a s b e e n s h o w n t h a t t h e r m a l t r e a t m e n t of t h e fibre i n v a c u m n a t 550 ° leads t o d e n s e r p a c k ing o f t h e p o l y m e r m o l e c u l e s o n t h e surface t h a n o n a n u n t r e a t e d surface. T h e l o o s c s t p a c k i n g occurs o n t h e r m a l t r e a t m e n t o f t h e fibre in v a c u u m w i t h o u t h y d r o g e n p e r o x i d e . T h e d e n s e p a c k i n g o n fibre t r e a t e d w i t h h y d r o g e n p e r o x i d e is e x p l a i n e d b y t h e p a r t i c u l a r c o n d i t i o n s o f p o l y m e r i z a t i o n o f t h e m o l e c u l e s s o r b e d o n a surface o n w h i c h t h e i n i t i a t o r is s o r b c d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y . T h e loose p a c k i n g o f t h e p o l y m e r a t t a c h e d t o t h e t h e r m a l l y t r e a t e d glass surface is d u e t o w e a k s o r p t i o n o f t h e m o n o m e r a n d c o n s e q u e n t p o l y m e r i z a t i o n in space. E s t i m a t i o n o f t h e p o l y m e r p a c k i n g d e n s i t y was m a d e o n t h e basis o f t h e ,~quilibrium swelling o f t h e surface l a y e r o f t h e p o l y m e r .

T h e k i n e t i c c o n d i t i o n s exer~ a s t r o n g effect o n t h e s h a p e o f t h e t h e r m a l e x p a n s i o n c u r v e s o f gels.
