PRODUCT Antimicrobial agents in elastics building products
PRORATION
A number of antimicrobial manufacturers are developing productsfor use in building and construction applications to combat what is termed “sick building syndrome”, and “building related illness,” which can cause a range of ailments in humans. High densities of fungi and bacteria have been found in carpets, wall coverings, hot tubs, shower heads, drains, etc. etc. Interface Research Corp. of Kennesaw, GA, USA is promoting its Intersept antimicrobial product to retard growth of fungi and bacteria in carpets and carpet backing. Intersept is a complex of ~lysubstitu~d qu~~~~s and ~a~yl-phospha~ esters. Also involved in this sector is Morton International of Danvers, MA, USA, which has introduced BP-1000, an OBPA-based product for use in rigid polymers.
Low dust antioxidants
Ciba-Geigy has developed free-flowing granular versions of its Irganox 1010 and 1076, called the FF series. The LVT (liquid vehicle ~~~010~) products by ICI, provide environmentally safer compounds. These include Topanol LVT 11, which is a 30% active formulation and is aimed at the stabilization of plasticizers used in PVC wire and cable compounds. An aqueous dispersion of Topanol CA, known as Topanol LVT 600, is said to prevent thermal and oxidative degradation in impact modifiers and in nylons.
Plasticizers
BF Goodrich is said to be developing “a new concept” in plasticizers, but is not releasing any further details at this stage. It will not, however, be part of the I-Iycarline, which are based on low molecular weight liquid acrylonitrile-butadienes.
Curing agent for epoxy resin composites
Spa&e Industrie-Chemikalien of Schering AG, Berkhamen, Germany, has introduced new curing com~nents on to the market for use in high temperature resistant solvent-free laminates and prepregs. This primarily concerns liquid product types with different viscosities. The consistency of the curing agents, which can be used without solvents, permits good compounding with many conventional resin components. If special m~ti~ctional epoxy resins are selected, glass transition temperatures of over 2OO*Ccan be achieved.
Lowi additives in the UK
AnchorChemical(UK) has been appointed by the German chemical rn~~act~er Chemischewerke Lowi as distributor of its range of Lowinox antioxidants and Lowilite UV absorbers and light stabilizers. Anchor is offering both product ranges from 1 January 1991 and becomes exclusive distributor in the UK and Eire from 1 April 1991. Anchor Chemical (UK) is widely known
