grouped in this atlas into sections dealing with instability, rotator cuff problems, arthrodesis and arthroplasty, fractures and problems relating to the clavicle. Within each section the commoner procedures are described for common problems and methods for dealing with rarer problems are outlined. For the Specialist Registrar, it is unlikely that they will see much shoulder surgery that is not covered in this atlas. Any text that attempts to convey the steps in the execution of a surgical procedure must rely on pictorial reinforcement of the written description. This book is in a large format, which allows clear reproduction of diagrams and photographs which themselves are readily understood. My only gripe in this respect is the tendency to use overmagnified digital images of arthroscopic procedures. I am sure that eventually the pixel size will be small enough for good-quality photography but for many authors that day has not yet arrived. As an atlas it is, on the whole, extremely successful in bringing the operations described to life. One must accept that the descriptions are personal methods and that many variations on the operations described exist. That being said, the contributors have been selected for their expertise in a given field and what better example to follow? This atlas is an excellent guide through the occasionally rugged terrain of shoulder surgery and can be recommended as a reference text in this field for both the orthopaedic surgeon in training and the established surgeon who is interested and involved in shoulder surgery.

This book is a collection of articles written by 109 different international contributors from 16 countries. Their work is distilled into 60 chapters. Although the book is divided into sections such as Tendons, Bone Devices, Thumb, Rheumatoid and Congenital to name a few, there is no theme to follow. Indeed, it almost feels as if the editors have wandered around the cocktail reception of an international Hand Surgery meeting with a tape recorder, interviewing as they go. This is not intended as a criticism, since the editors do not try to claim that the book is anything else. The resultant 'pot pourri' of contributions, whilst appearing akin to a hardback collection of review articles from the Journal of Hand Surgery, is made more valid by an editorial commentary on each article at the end of each section. The book is beautifully produced with excellent layout and quality illustrations. It feels more than its current price tag (as works from this publishing house often do). The real value of this work lies in its stimulating and thought-provoking nature. Fascinating though it is to read of topics such as a new classification system for Kienbock's disease, the arthroscopic treatment of ganglia, or the use of vascularized bone grafts in the treatment of scaphoid non-union, it is not standard exam fodder for higher surgical trainees. The book would be an excellent 'coffee table' volume in a hand surgeon's office, or as a 'pick-it-up-and-put-it-down' light read. Valuable for a hand surgeon (current or intended) it most certainly is; required reading for the Board/ FRCS(Orth) it is not.

As one would expect from such an august body, this is an excellent piece of work and one which fills a gap in the orthopaedic publishing world. The book is divided by region and then covers the more common conditions of that area in a no-nonsense, logically organized format through definition, symptoms and signs and treatment, through to differential diagnoses and flagging up any potential pitfalls of management. It does not pretend to be comprehensive but should be required reading and would be a useful reference text
