Entek opens European
of ce Entek Extruders has established an office in the United Kingdom to serve the European market. Entek Extruders is a division of Entek Manufacturing Inc, which has its headquarters in Oregon, USA. The new European office is based in Uttoxeter. '1"he company says that the office will serve the key markets that use twin screw extruders and their associated ancillary products throughout Europe. Stephen Jones has been employed to establish and manage the new operation. He has over 16 years experience in the twin screw compounding and extrusion industry. Entek Extruders manufactures high-speed, high-throughput, co-rotating twin screw extruders, as well as specializing in the manufacture of replacement screw elements and barrel sections for manufacturers of other twin screw extruders. The extruders are available in sizes from 27 to 133 mm. Complete turnkey systems including strand dies, vacuum stuffers, screenchangers, LIW feeders, metal detectors, gear pumps and pelletizers are also available. The new E-MAX T M Strand Die includes features such as quick-opening design, built-in breaker plate and the ability to pull the screws right through the die assembly. Silberline wins award for metallic pigment UK company Silberline Ltd has gained an award, the Queen's Award for Enterprise, for its Silvet metallic pigment. The award recognises Silberline's development of new methods for producing metallic pigments and supplying them safely and conveniently to users. The Silvet product holds metal flake pigments in a solid resinous or polymeric carrier. Incorporation of the flakes in the carrier prevents them from posing a serious dust and explosion problems and avoids the use of volatile solvents. According to Ian Wheeler, who first developed the prod-
uct in 1982, "The material changed the market's use of pigments as it removed the requirement for potentially hazardous solvents while also eliminating the handling problems inherent in a dry product." Sales of Silvet in the plastics industry began to rise when it was used in mouldings for ski boot manufacturers to add sparkle to their products. In 1994, Silberline opened a purpose-built plant that raised the capacity of Silvet to ten times the original level. Contact: Silberline Tel: +44 1333 424 734 Fax: +44 1333 421 369
Cyclics Corporation sets up European base Cyclics Corporation has established a European subsidiary based in Stuttgart, Germany. The company says that Cyclics Europe GmbH will cover the whole of Europe. Roman Eder has been appointed managing director. "The collaborations with European manufacturers have dominated our early development efforts," saysJohn Ciovacco, chief executive officer of Cyclics Corporation. "By expanding into Europe we can serve our European customers faster and accelerate our growth." Roman Eder, managing director of Cyclics Europe, adds: "The market in Europe has unique
drivers that should speed the acceptance and introduction of low viscosity thermoplastics into numerous applications. The recyclability of thermoplastic composites, unique post-processing options and the lack of exotherm and volatile emissions during polymerization give low viscosity thermoplastics a unique market position." Cyclics Corporation is commercializing a new technology, known as cyclic thermoplastics, based on technology developed and patented by The General Electric Company. The company says that cyclic thermoplastics are a breakthrough in plastics processing - making new Plastics Additives &

products possible and changing the economics of existing ones. They are claimed to offer the processing advantages of a thermoset (low viscosity), but retain the material properties of a thermoplastic when polymerized. The product range includes low viscosity forms of polyester thermoplastics. The company adds that there are many potential applications in structural composites and compounding, where the low viscosity of these materials allow high filler volumes and unique polymer chemistries.
