FOCUS Sadara joint venture begins polyethylene production Dow Chemical's joint venture in the Middle East with Saudi Aramco Sadara Chemical Co - achieved a key milestone of first polyethylene production on 8 Dec 2015, meeting previously announced targets to begin production by end-2015. Sadara's 26 manufacturing assets remain on schedule for a sequenced start-up process, beginning with the polyolefins envelope to maximize timing in the ethylene cycle, followed by ethylene oxide/propylene oxide and their derivatives. Calls for biomass conversion projects in France On 23 Dec 2015, the French environmental and energy agency Ademe launched a call for projects in the plant chemistry and biosourced materials sectors. Support will be provided for selected projects as part of the Future Investments (Investissement d'avenir) programme, which aims to develop technological and economically viable solutions for biomass conversion. The projects concerned must contribute to bringing to market new and competitively priced biosourced products made from: residual biomass; industrial, agricultural and forestry byproducts; microalgae; and agricultural production. Six product categories will be given priority: chemical intermediates, surfactants, solvents, polymers, composite materials and advanced biofuels. The call for projects will close on 13 Feb 2017. Intermediate closure dates will be on 25 Feb, 6 Jun and 17 Oct 2016. ['Focus on Surfactants', Feb 2016], is demonstrating how its pharmaceutical grade surfactants can provide solutions for the 'solubility challenges' in the pharmaceutical industry. The business showcased its existing docusate sodium surfactants and launched its new DocuSolv pharmaceutical grade surfactants at the 5th Annual Drug Formulation and Bioavailability Summit in Philadelphia, PA, USA, from 25-27 Jan 2016. The new DocuSolv pharmaceutical grade surfactants are specifically formulated for use as excipients in oral solid dose formulations (OSDF). They exhibit all the characteristics of docusate while offering additional handling and faster dissolution. According to the company, these formulation aids offer a smaller particle size that dissolves faster and expands the formulation effectiveness of more APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients); better handling and reduction in processing time; enriched bioavailability via decreased dissolution times under stomach conditions; enhanced solubility, dispersion and wettability of APIs; and easy-to-create solutions with higher concentrations. Croda expands alkoxylation facilities in Singapore to continue innovation in Asia Pacific In Dec 2015, UK speciality chemicals group Croda International Plc opened the expansion of alkoxylation facilities at its site on Jurong Island, Singapore, as part of its global strategy to provide innovative solutions closer to customers in the fast-growing markets of the Asia Pacific region. Design and construction work took place over 2 years and the new unit entered service in 4Q 2015. The nearly £18 M (€24 M) capital investment more than doubles the capacity at the site from 12,000 to 30,000 tonnes/y, and provides additional flexibility to manufacture new chemistries, the company said. Croda revealed that the project had also led it to recruit highly qualified staff but has not disclosed the number of new jobs created. The site currently employs 195 people. Nick Challoner (president of Croda Asia Pacific) said that the expansion was a further stage in the group's development strategy and would enable it to provide innovative solutions for customers in Asia. Croda makes speciality alkoxylates and esters at the

Jurong Island site. It also has regional headquarters and research and development operations, including its Collaboration and Training Centre, on mainland Singapore. The company opened its first sales office in the country in 1985. In 1990, Croda Singapore started manufacturing esters. It then started its first integrated alkoxylation plant in Asia on Jurong Island in 1999. The latest expansion is Croda's largest investment in Singapore since the plant was built. The company also recently reported that it has met a target to certify all relevant supply chains to handle CSPO (certified sustainable palm oil) derivatives. Eleven manufacturing sites, handling more than 99% of the palm oil derivative volumes used, are now Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Supply Chain Certified (RSPO SCC) via physical supply chains, meeting the corporate target 'to have RSPO certification of all our relevant supply chains by the end of 2015'. Its Jurong Island site was the first to be certified, in 2012, and in 2015 the final four sites in Gouda (The Netherlands), Leek and Hull (UK) and Chocques (France) all received RSPO certification. Croda can now handle CSPO materials from facilities in Asia Pacific, Europe, and South and North America. The company says that this latest development demonstrates its 'commitment to sustainability and the responsible sourcing of palm oil and palm kernel oil on a global scale'. In other recent company news, Croda has bought the Netherlandsheadquartered seed enhancement specialist Incotec Group for €155 M. Incotec is a developer and provider of proprietary and sustainable technologies for field crops and vegetable seeds. For the year ended 30 Sep 2015, its unaudited revenues reached €71 M.
