BASF’s pigments for rotary printing on ceramics At the recent Ceramitec exhibition, BASF presented four new pigments for rotary printing on ceramics. All four pigments have very high colour strength and are eminently suitable for transparent glazes. They are namely: Sicocer F Yellow 2255, Sicocer F Red 2355, Sicocer F Blue 2555, and Sicocer F Black 2955. BASF also displayed its zircon red coral pigment, Sicocer F Red 2360, which was already described in ‘Focus on Pigments’, Aug 2003, 7 Press release (4 Aug 2003) from: BASF Group, Website: http://www.basf.de
Cabot’s Elftex-P100 carbon black for pressure-pipe applications Cabot Corp recently introduced the new carbon black for pressure-pipe applications, named Elftex-P100, which is said to outperform existing grades. Cabot states that its new P-type carbon black offers enhanced particle size, compound moisture absorption, dispersability, microscopic dispersion and higher purity. Improved microscopic dispersion helps to reduce the risk of premature failure in the pipe wall, while improving inservice flow performance. The transfer of tastes or odours to drinking water is eliminated as a result of the low level of chemical impurities (such as ash, sulfur and toluene extract). Higher ultraviolet light absorbing efficiency and superior weathering performance result from the very fine primary particle size, and also creates a superior weathering performance. Moisture absorption can be significantly reduced and this helps to cut down on processing problems such as surface defects and internal cavities in the finished product that is associated with conventional carbon blacks. Cabot extends its Plasadd range of plastic masterbatches to 40 products Cabot has extended its Plasadd range of additive plastics masterbatches to 40, as a result of launching 17 more products. These include the masterbatch products designated PE8737, PE-8739 and PP-8738, which have been formulated to boost ultraviolet (UV) stability in film, tape and injection-moulded plastics. The new anti-fogging masterbatch, Plasadd EV-874 has been designed for use in making mono-layer and multi-layer agricultural plastic film used for mini-tunnels and greenhouses. Other additions to the portfolio comprise: PE-9050 and PE8741 anti-blocking and anti-slip additives; PE-8847 antioxidant masterbatch; and LL-8809, a concentrated processing aid. New masterbatches designed for use with polystyrene and styrenics include: PD-8772 and PS-8774, a concentrated desiccant masterbatch for styrenics. High Performance Plastics, Aug 2003, 3
Ciba’s quinacridone violet Ciba Specialty chemicals has launched Cromophtal Violet RP, a red-shade violet quinacridone pigment, with consistent dispersability, as well as good light- and weatherresistance. European Plastics News, Oct 2003, 30 (8), 32
Clariant’s Renol masterbatches for rigid & flexible PVC Clariant Masterbatches has launched a new range of PVC-based colour concentrates in pellets or dry powder form. The Renol range of colour concentrates are suitable for both rigid and flexible forms of PVC. Plastics and Rubber Asia, Sep 2003, 18 (121), 17
masterbatches, supplied as granules, with pigment loadings of around 65%. The masterbatches are polymerspecific, thus avoiding the risk of adverse effects during processing. The granules are dust-free, clean and easy-to-use. The risk of crosscontamination is much less than with conventional pigments in fine powder form. According to some uPVC processors, savings of up to 75% on cleaning times can be achieved. European Plastics News, Oct 2003, 30 (8), 32
Dai Nippon Toryo’s new paint contains photocatalytic TiO2 Dai Nippon Toryo (DNT, of Osaka) has introduced Novoclean Bio, a water-based paint for indoor applications. It contains catalyst-grade TiO2 to assist in the photocatalytic decomposition of organic compounds. DNT points out that organic compounds are mainly responsible for “sick-building syndrome.” The paint also contains special resins that are supposed to improve stain-resistance of the painted surface. DNT is marketing its Novoclean Bio paint to schools, department stores and other institutions, priced at Yen 16000 for a 16 kilo can. APCJ, Asia Pacific Coatings Journal, Aug 2003, 16 (4), 8
Eckart’s extends Visionaire range of metallic pigments Eckart has expanded its line of Visionaire metallic pigments with new grades for silver sea, sunflower gold, amber, cinnamon, honey, corn, olive gold and lava. These metallic pigments incorporate silicas and aluminium or copper bronze powders. They are formulated using a new type of microencapsulation technology, which yields metallic sequins that are extremely opaque to allow for very good coverage.
