Materials of Construction.[or Steam Power Plant. L. M. Wyatt. Published by Applied Science Publishers Ltd. 1976. 311 pages with 20 Tables and 119 Illustrations. Price: £15.00. This volume sets out to highlight those problems experienced by the author over some 15 years' experience as Chief Metallurgist to the UK Central Electricity Generating Board, which he regards as of widest interest or in fields where technology has made the most rapid advances. After a brief, but well-directed, description of the various parts of current plant, which clearly indicates component areas where material problems are likely to occur, the volume then gives a review of the various effects of the environment and of mechanical stressing. The background material continues with a summary of the relevant aspects of ferrous metallurgy and a compendium of the steels in current use in the UK, including a description of the fabrication aspects, which clearly directs the reader's attention to the real practical problems. The sections on nuclear fuels, graphite and effects of irradiation are likely to be of only indirect interest to readers of this journal, but the discussions of circuit materials, boilers, pressure vessels and steam line components are full of illuminating comment and valuable guidance. The book concludes with a review of materials problems in current and future turbo-generators. Overall, the book makes easy reading: the style is fluid and the contents interesting. The presentation is excellent and it is well indexed. Of its nature it does not deal in depth with any item but it provides a valuable basis for further study by its illuminating and carefully selected commentary and its wide ranging lists of references. It uniquely fills a gap in current engineering libraries. R. W. NICHOLS

the fitting or welding of pipes. Starting with an explanation of SI units and symbols, it proceeds to discuss weights, volumes and capacities of tanks. It then gives much practical detail related to pipe bends, gaskets, insulation, connections, templates and branches. Methods of calculating offsets and thermal expansion are detailed. A feature of the pocket book is its easy reference format, and its clearly set-out tables. The whole presentation seems ideal for the intended market. R. W. NICHOLS
